What you’ll do
Before the pool opens
- Check water clarity — you must be able to see the drain covers clearly from the deck
- Confirm all main drain covers are secured, the balance tank is covered and locked, and no deck tiles are loose or missing
- Check chlorine, pH and water temperature, and log them
- Confirm rescue tube, first-aid kit, spine board and emergency phone are present and working
- Count and position the rescue equipment before the first swimmer enters
While classes run
- Maintain active surveillance of your assigned zone to the 10/20 standard: scan your full zone every 10 seconds, be able to reach any swimmer within 20 seconds
- Stay on the stand or walking the deck — never seated with the swimmers behind you
- Watch the non-swimmers and the shallow end hardest. That is where incidents happen, not the deep end
- Enforce pool rules with children and parents: no running, no diving in shallow water, no entry without a coach present
- Count heads at the start and end of every batch
When something goes wrong
- Execute the rescue, clear the water, and start first aid or CPR
- Call the emergency contacts in the order on the board
- Write the incident report the same day, before you leave
