The ideal candidate will combine hands-on PLC programming and industrial automation expertise with strong software development skills in C#/.NET and Python. The objective is to replace manual engineering activities with secure, reliable, repeatable, and auditable workflows while maintaining production safety and manufacturing uptime.
Key Responsibilities
1. Industrial Automation & Tool Development
- Design, develop, and maintain software utilities to automate program uploads, downloads, retrieval, backup, and deployment for Siemens PLCs, Rockwell PLCs, ABB robots, and CNC systems.
- Develop integrations with Siemens TIA Portal Openness, Rockwell Studio 5000 automation interfaces and SDKs, and ABB Robot SDKs or Robot Web Services.
- Automate engineering workflows for PLC logic, robot programs, and CNC part programs to reduce manual intervention and improve operational consistency.
- Develop reusable software components and automation frameworks that support multiple device types and engineering environments.
2. PLC Programming & Engineering Integration
- Develop, modify, and troubleshoot Siemens PLC programs using TIA Portal for S7-1200 and S7-1500 controllers.
- Work with Rockwell ControlLogix and CompactLogix platforms using Studio 5000 / Logix Designer.
- Develop and maintain PLC logic, including Ladder Diagram (LAD), Function Block Diagram (FBD), Structured Control Language (SCL), standard function blocks, and Add-On Instructions (AOIs).
- Work with engineering project files and formats, including L5X and L5K, for program comparison, extraction, and controlled updates.
- Integrate engineering software with PLCs and other shop-floor automation systems using supported interfaces and communication protocols.
3. Automated Deployment, Backup & Version Control
- Build automated workflows for program retrieval, scheduled or controlled backups, deployment, and restoration.
- Implement change detection and comparison mechanisms to identify differences between online device programs and offline engineering versions.
- Maintain version histories with traceability of who made a change, what changed, when it occurred, and why.
- Integrate with Git/GitHub and industrial version management or backup solutions such as octoplant, versiondog, or Rockwell FactoryTalk AssetCentre.
- Develop reliable rollback and recovery mechanisms to support controlled restoration of previously validated programs.
4. Safety, Governance & Change Management
- Implement deployment safeguards, including approval workflows, device-state validation, pre-update backups, and controlled release procedures.
- Introduce appropriate interlocks and execution checks to prevent unintended changes to production-critical equipment.
- Ensure program updates follow established engineering approvals, change management procedures, and plant safety requirements.
- Design workflows to minimize operational disruption and preserve manufacturing availability.
- Maintain auditable records of program changes, approvals, deployment activities, backups, and recovery operations.
5. Testing & Virtual Validation
- Validate software tools and deployment workflows using available simulation and emulation environments, including Siemens PLCSIM Advanced, Rockwell Logix Echo, and ABB RobotStudio.
- Test program comparison, backup, deployment, restoration, and failure-recovery scenarios before production rollout.
- Develop repeatable test cases to verify application reliability, data integrity, and expected device interactions.
- Investigate software-to-hardware integration issues and perform structured root-cause analysis.
- Document test results, identified risks, corrective actions, and deployment readiness.
6. Robotics & CNC Integration
- Develop automation utilities for ABB robot program backup, retrieval, module management, and controlled updates.
- Work with ABB PC SDK, Robot Web Services, or equivalent supported interfaces.
- Support CNC part-program transfer and management workflows for Siemens SINUMERIK and FANUC systems.
- Integrate applicable CNC interfaces, including FANUC FOCAS where required.
- Extend the automation framework to other robot and CNC platforms as project requirements evolve.
7. Interfaces, APIs & Documentation
- Develop lightweight web interfaces, APIs, or supporting utilities that expose program status, device health, backup history, version differences, and deployment results.
- Build integrations that allow plant engineering teams to access automation workflows and operational information efficiently.
- Maintain technical documentation, interface specifications, configuration guides, test evidence, and user instructions.
- Collaborate with plant controls engineers, IT teams, maintenance personnel, and software engineering stakeholders to define requirements and resolve technical issues.
Mandatory Technical Skills
- Siemens Automation: Hands-on experience with TIA Portal, S7-1200/S7-1500 PLCs, and LAD, FBD, and SCL programming.
- TIA Portal Integration: Practical experience with TIA Portal Openness for automating engineering tasks.
