We are looking for a skilled and detail-oriented Product Designer with experience in reverse engineering to join our manufacturing team. The candidate will be responsible for product design and development, reverse engineering of existing components, 3D modelling, engineering drawings, and design optimization. The ideal candidate should have a solid mechanical engineering background and practical knowledge of manufacturing processes to convert physical components, samples, or customer requirements into accurate, manufacturable designs.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and develop mechanical components, products, and assemblies based on customer requirements and project specifications.
- Perform reverse engineering of existing products and components by studying physical samples, dimensions, geometry, and functional requirements.
- Analyze existing components to understand their design, material, construction, functionality, and manufacturing methods.
- Create accurate 3D models and 2D engineering drawings from physical samples, reference drawings, or available technical data.
- Conduct dimensional measurements and component analysis using appropriate measuring instruments and tools.
- Use CAD software such as SolidWorks, AutoCAD, Creo, or CATIA for product modelling, drafting, and assembly design.
- Prepare engineering drawings with appropriate dimensions, tolerances, GD&T;, material specifications, and surface finish requirements.
- Develop and maintain BOMs (Bill of Materials), design specifications, and engineering documentation.
- Ensure designs are suitable for manufacturing processes such as sheet metal fabrication, machining, stamping, welding,
and assembly.
- Collaborate with production, quality, purchase, and other engineering teams to resolve design and manufacturing issues.
- Support prototype development, testing, validation, and design modifications based on performance feedback.
- Identify opportunities for product improvement, cost reduction, material optimization, and design standardization.
- Verify reverse-engineered designs against original components and functional requirements to ensure dimensional accuracy and fitment.
- Maintain proper records of design changes, revisions, and technical documentation.
Required Skills and Competencies
- Strong knowledge of mechanical engineering fundamentals and product design principles.
- Hands-on experience in reverse engineering of mechanical parts, components, or assemblies.
- Proficiency in 3D modelling and 2D drafting using CAD software such as SolidWorks, Creo, CATIA, or AutoCAD.
- Good understanding of engineering drawings, GD&T;, dimensional tolerances, and fitment requirements.
- Knowledge of manufacturing processes, including machining, sheet metal fabrication, stamping, welding, and assembly.
- Familiarity with material selection, component functionality, and design for manufacturability (DFM).
- Ability to interpret physical samples, existing components, sketches, and customer drawings and convert them into production-ready designs.
- Knowledge of dimensional inspection tools such as Vernier calipers, micrometers, height gauges, and other relevant measuring instruments.
- Understanding of BOM preparation, design validation, and engineering change management.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and attention-to-detail skills.
- Good communication and coordination skills to work effectively with cross-functional teams.
Educational Qualification and Experience
- B.E. / B.Tech / Diploma in Mechanical Engineering or a relevant mechanical discipline.
- 8-10 years of relevant experience in product design, mechanical design, or product development within a manufacturing industry.
- Practical experience in reverse engineering, including component measurement, CAD modelling, drawing preparation, and design validation.
- Experience with manufacturing-oriented product design and component development is preferred.
Preferred Candidate Profile
- Experience in reverse engineering of machined, fabricated, sheet metal, or other mechanical components.
- Ability to work independently on physical component analysis and convert findings into accurate engineering designs.
- Practical understanding of manufacturing feasibility, tolerances, materials, and assembly requirements.
- Experience in prototype development, product improvement, and resolving production-related design issues.
- Ability to manage multiple design assignments and meet project timelines.
