About this role

You will own the design and development of a remotely operated, stabilised electromechanical platform for defence use, from concept and CAD through prototyping, integration, testing and field trials. This is a design-led role. You will create the mechanical architecture, and you will also integrate the motors, sensors, electronics and control software that make it work as a complete product.

We are looking for an engineer who is strong in mechanical design and comfortable across electronics and coding wherever the robotics requires it. This is not a ROS demo or simulation-only role. Your designs will be built, tested on real hardware and taken to field trials.

What you'll be doing

Mechanical and Product Design

- Design the mechanical structure of a multi-axis robotic platform: housings, brackets, yokes, gear and drive trains, bearings, seals and mounts
- Create 3D models, assemblies and manufacturing drawings with GD&T; in SolidWorks or similar CAD
- Run design calculations, tolerance stack-ups and structural analysis (FEA) for strength, stiffness, vibration and weight
- Design for manufacturability and assembly, working with machining, fabrication and vendor partners
- Select materials, fasteners, coatings and sealing for rugged, field-deployed use

Actuation and Electromechanical Integration
- Size and select motors, gearboxes, encoders and brakes against torque, speed, accuracy and weight budgets
- Integrate BLDC/PMSM motor drives,



IMUs and feedback sensors into the mechanical design
- Define wiring harnesses, connectors, cable routing and power distribution for a battery-powered system

Testing and Validation
- Build test rigs and measure backlash, friction, pointing accuracy and repeatability
- Support environmental, EMI/EMC and field trials, analyse results and feed improvements back into the design

Mandatory skills and experience

- 2+ years of hands-on experience designing and developing robotic or electromechanical products (robotics, gimbals, drones, automation, EV or defence)
- Robust mechanical design fundamentals: mechanisms, machine design, tolerancing, materials and manufacturing processes
- Proficiency in SolidWorks or similar CAD, including assemblies and detailed drawings
- Actuator sizing and selection: BLDC or servo motors, gearboxes, encoders or resolvers

Plus points

- Experience in the design and development of remote weapon stations, UGVs, robotic arms, pan-tilt units or gimbals
- FEA and simulation experience (SolidWorks Simulation, ANSYS or similar)
- MATLAB/Simulink or Python for modelling, tuning and test scripts
- Exposure to IMUs and sensor fusion, ROS 2, MIL-grade harnessing, JSS 55555 or MIL-STD-810
