Head – Mechanical Engineering
Location:
Nashik | Department: Engineering NIDO is looking for a senior Mechanical Engineering leader to build and lead the mechanical engineering function for our warehouse automation, material handling, robotics and intralogistics products and systems. This is not a pure project-design or engineering coordination role. The person will own mechanical product architecture, engineering standards, design quality, product reliability, team capability and release discipline across NIDO's automation portfolio. We are looking for someone who can combine strong engineering fundamentals with practical product development experience and build a function that delivers reliable, standardised, manufacturable and cost-competitive products. What you will own You will be responsible for the complete mechanical engineering function across product development and customer projects, including:
• Mechanical architecture and design for conveyors, sorters, lifts, ASRS/material handling systems, robotic equipment and other automation products.
• Product design and development, from concept engineering, calculations and detailed design to prototyping, validation and production release.
• Mechanical systems involving structures, frames, mechanisms, drives, transmissions, bearings, shafts, rollers, belts, chains, linear motion systems and precision assemblies.
• Engineering calculations covering loads, stresses, deflections, torque, power transmission, fatigue, vibration and other relevant design parameters.
• 3D modelling, assemblies, manufacturing drawings, GD&T;, tolerance stack-ups and mechanical BOMs.
• Mechanical design standards, component standardisation, modular architecture and approved design libraries.
• SolidWorks / equivalent 3D CAD design standards, PDM/PLM practices and engineering documentation discipline.
• Mechanical product design for standard NIDO products as well as project/application engineering.
• Design reviews, technical approvals, controlled design releases and engineering-change management.
• Design for Manufacturing and Assembly (DFM/DFA), value engineering, cost reduction, localisation and component optimisation.
• Product reliability, durability, maintainability, serviceability and lifecycle engineering.
• Prototype development, design verification, testing, validation and engineering improvements before product release.
• Mechanical safety, guarding, ergonomics and compliance with applicable machinery safety and customer standards.
• Technical support to Manufacturing, Procurement, Quality, Installation & Commissioning and Service teams.
• Resolution of recurring product and field issues through structured root-cause analysis, corrective actions and design improvements.
• Building engineering capability, reviewing technical work and developing the Mechanical Engineering team. Leadership responsibility The Head – Mechanical Engineering will lead the mechanical engineering organisation and work closely with: Electrical Engineering
· Systems Engineering
· Controls & Automation
· Product Management
· Reliability & Validation
· Procurement
· Factory Operations
· Quality
· Installation & Commissioning You will be expected to create a function that is increasingly based on standard product platforms, modular designs, reusable assemblies, controlled releases and strong engineering governance, rather than repeated project-by-project redesign. An important part of the role will be developing a technically capable team, strengthening engineering review practices and ensuring that mechanical engineering decisions are made with a clear understanding of performance, reliability, manufacturing cost and long-term product competitiveness. Important role boundary At NIDO:
• Mechanical Engineering owns the mechanical product architecture — structures, mechanisms, mechanical drives, assemblies, mechanical BOMs, manufacturing drawings and mechanical design integrity.
• Electrical Engineering owns the electrical hardware architecture — power distribution, panels, electrical devices, safety hardware and wiring.
• Controls & Automation owns PLC/software logic, motion programming and controls software architecture.
• Systems Engineering coordinates system-level requirements, interfaces and integration across mechanical, electrical, controls and software disciplines. The Mechanical Head must therefore be technically strong enough to work across disciplines while maintaining clear ownership of mechanical design decisions, engineering quality and product performance. What we are looking for We would ideally like someone with:
• 15+ years of relevant mechanical engineering experience, including substantial product development and engineering leadership responsibility.
• Strong experience in industrial automation, material handling, warehouse automation, conveyors, sortation systems, ASRS, industrial machinery, robotics or similar engineered equipment.
• Hands-on mechanical design experience, including complex assemblies, mechanisms, drive systems and industrial equipment.
• Strong proficiency in SolidWorks and/or equivalent 3D mechanical CAD platforms, with exposure to PDM/PLM systems.
• Sound knowledge of engineering calculations, material selection, machine elements, structural design, tolerances and manufacturing processes.
• Experience taking products through the complete development lifecycle — concept, design, prototype, testing, validation and production.
• Strong understanding of sheet metal fabrication, machining, welding, assembly processes, bought-out components and manufacturing constraints.
• Experience with mechanical BOMs, engineering documentation, design releases, revision control and engineering-change processes.
• Proven ability to improve product reliability, reduce recurring design issues and implement sustainable engineering improvements.
• Strong understanding of DFM/DFA, value engineering, standardisation, modularisation and cost optimisation.
• Ability to critically review complex mechanical designs and challenge engineering assumptions rather than only manage a team administratively.
• Experience working across Product, Electrical, Controls, Production, Procurement, Quality and customer-site teams.
• Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving and structured root-cause-analysis capability.
• Demonstrated ability to recruit, mentor and develop engineers while establishing strong technical standards and accountability. We are particularly interested in candidates who have built and improved repeatable industrial products, rather than having worked exclusively on one-off project engineering. Preferred background Experience in one or more of the following would be particularly relevant: Warehouse Automation
· Material Handling Equipment
· Conveyor Systems
· Sortation Systems
· ASRS
· Industrial Robotics
· Industrial Machinery
· Special Purpose Machines
· Factory Automation
· High-Speed Mechanical Systems Experience in product-oriented engineering organisations, especially those developing and manufacturing their own machinery, would be an advantage. Education B.
E. / B.
Tech in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics or a closely related engineering discipline. A postgraduate qualification in Mechanical Design, Machine Design or a related specialisation would be an advantage. What success in this role looks like Over time, we expect this person to build a Mechanical Engineering function where:
• mechanical designs are standardised, modular and reusable;
• new products move through structured design, prototyping, testing and validation stages;
• product reliability, durability and maintainability improve measurably;
• design releases happen on time and with high first-pass quality;
• project-specific engineering variation reduces;
• manufacturing and assembly become simpler and more consistent;
• product costs improve through intelligent design and component standardisation;
• recurring field failures are eliminated through permanent engineering solutions;
• mechanical BOMs, drawings and revisions remain accurate and controlled;
• engineering decisions are supported by calculations, testing and technical evidence;
• junior engineers become stronger technically and develop independent problem-solving capability;
• Mechanical, Electrical, Controls and Systems Engineering work as one integrated engineering organisation. About NIDO NIDO builds industrial technology for intelligent material flow, including automation, mechanisation, robotics and software solutions for warehouses, distribution centres and industrial operations. We are in a phase of strengthening and scaling our engineering capabilities, with a focus on developing reliable, innovative, standardised and globally competitive products engineered in India. We are looking for senior engineering leaders who want to help build not only projects, but solid products, scalable engineering platforms and high-performing engineering organisations. This role offers the opportunity to shape NIDO's mechanical engineering capabilities and contribute directly to the development of our next generation of products. Interested candidates can apply through LinkedIn or share their profile with the NIDO recruitment team.
