The job responsibilities of an Operating Theater (OT) Scrub Nurse typically include the following:
Preparation of the Operating Theater
Sterilizing and preparing surgical instruments, equipment, and supplies before surgery.
Ensuring that the operating area is clean and sterile to maintain infection control.
Assisting During Surgery
Passing instruments, sutures, and other sterile supplies to the surgeon and surgical team during the procedure.
Anticipating the needs of the surgical team and responding promptly.
Maintaining Sterile Techniques
Ensuring sterile fields are not contaminated.
Monitoring the surgical setting to prevent infection risks.
Handling Surgical Instruments
Counting instruments, sponges, and needles before and after surgery to ensure nothing is left inside the patient.
Properly handling and disposing of sharps and other equipment.
Patient Safety and Comfort




Assisting in positioning the patient on the operating table.
Advocating for patient safety and needs during surgery.
Collaboration and Communication
Coordinating with surgeons, anesthetists, and other members of the surgical team.
Communicating clearly to ensure effective workflow in the OT.
Documentation and Reporting
Maintaining accurate records of the surgical procedure, equipment used, and any incidents that occur.
Reporting any breaches in sterile technique or equipment malfunction.
Post-operative Duties
