Department: Production / Process Operations
Reports to: Shift Supervisor
Employment Type: Full-time, rotating shifts

Role Summary

The DCS Operator monitors and controls the chemical processes of the Solvay Process, which produce soda ash (sodium carbonate) and calcium chloride. From the control room, the operator keeps the plant running safely and efficiently, responds to process deviations in real time, and works with maintenance, quality, and safety teams to meet production targets and product specifications.

Key Responsibilities

Process control and optimization

- Operate and monitor the plant through the DCS, adjusting setpoints and control variables to keep the Solvay process stable and productive.
- Maintain temperature, pressure, flow, and level within operating limits for ammoniation, carbonation, filtration, calcination, and calcium chloride recovery.
- Identify opportunities to improve yield, throughput, and energy efficiency within approved procedures.

Safety and compliance

- Follow all safety procedures for hazardous materials, high-pressure systems, and exothermic chemical reactions, including permit-to-work and lockout/tagout requirements.
- Respond to alarms promptly, apply emergency shutdown procedures when required, and report every incident, near miss, and unsafe condition.
- Comply with local, state, and national environmental regulations, including the protected handling and disposal of chemical by-products.

Troubleshooting and problem resolution

- Detect deviations from standard operating conditions, diagnose their causes, and take corrective action to limit downtime and product loss.
- Escalate issues that exceed your authority or training to the Shift Supervisor without delay.

Production and quality

- Work toward daily and monthly production targets for soda ash and calcium chloride in coordination with the production team.
- Monitor process variables that affect product quality and act on laboratory results and quality control feedback.

Equipment and maintenance coordination

- Report equipment malfunctions and anomalies to the maintenance department promptly and with clear detail.
- Support safe isolation, handover, and restart of equipment during shutdowns and maintenance work.

Records and reporting

- Keep accurate shift logs, operating parameters, production data, and safety records in manual and electronic formats as required.
- Provide real-time status updates to the Shift Supervisor at the start, during, and at the end of each shift.

Cost and resource control

- Use raw materials, utilities, and steam efficiently to control operating costs.
- Report process inefficiencies and discrepancies that increase operating costs to management.

Leadership and teamwork

- Model a strong safety culture and operational discipline on every shift.
- Provide on-the-job training and guidance to recent operators and junior staff.
- Communicate clearly with other operators, shift supervisors, maintenance, quality control, safety, and management.

Qualifications

Required

- Diploma or degree in Chemical Engineering, Instrumentation, Electrical, or a related discipline,

or an equivalent industrial training certificate (such as ITI).
- Hands-on experience operating a DCS in a continuous process plant, ideally in chemicals, alkali, petrochemicals, or a similar industry.
- Working knowledge of process control fundamentals, including PID loops, alarms, and interlocks.
- Ability to work rotating shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
- Strong attention to detail and accurate record-keeping.

Preferred

- Experience with DCS platforms such as Honeywell, Yokogawa, ABB, Siemens, or Emerson.
- Familiarity with the Solvay process, soda ash manufacturing, or calcium chloride production.
- Prior experience in a safety-critical or high-pressure environment.
- Basic knowledge of chemical hazards, Process Safety Management, or environmental compliance.

Core Competencies

- Safety mindset: Puts safety ahead of production and never bypasses a safety system to keep the plant running.
- Analytical problem-solving: Reads trends, connects symptoms to causes, and acts calmly under pressure.
- Communication: Gives clear, timely handovers and escalates problems early.
- Ownership: Follows through on alarms, logs, and corrective actions to completion.
- Teamwork: Supports colleagues during abnormal situations and shares knowledge freely.

Working Conditions

The role is based in a control room with exposure to plant areas that may involve noise, heat, dust, and chemical hazards. Appropriate PPE is mandatory when entering the process area. The role requires rotating 8- or 12-hour shifts and occasional overtime during shutdowns or abnormal situations.
