S., Europe, Japan, India and Canada. Role overview We are looking for a German Patent Translator to own all German translation work for a key client, in both directions. You will translate English patent applications into German for filing in Germany. After office actions, those applications are amended in German, and you will translate the amended versions back into English. The German → English work is the core of the role. German applications often use interchangeable technical terms, so we need someone who reads German fluently and can catch errors that machine translation misses, without relying on a translation tool.

Key responsibilities
• Translate amended German patent applications (after office actions) back into English.
• Quality-check machine and AI translation output against the German source, and correct technical terms, claim wording and meaning.
• Translate and review English patent applications into German for filing in Germany.
• Identify the correct English meaning of interchangeable German technical terms from the context of the invention.
• Make sure amended claims and description stay consistent with the original application and the office action responses.
• Build and maintain client glossaries and term bases for consistent terminology.




• Deliver within agreed turnaround times and quality standards, and flag unclear or ambiguous source text.
• Keep client documents confidential and follow data security practices. Requirements Must have
• German at C1 or C2 level (Goethe-Zertifikat, TestDaF, DSH or equivalent), with the ability to read and understand technical German without translation tools.
• Excellent written English.
• 2+ years translating patents, or technical or legal documents, between German and English.
• Experience reviewing and post-editing machine translation output.
• Understanding of patent structure: claims, description, abstract and amendments.
• Strong attention to detail and the ability to work through a high volume of cases.
• Bachelor's or Master's degree in German, Translation Studies, Engineering or Science. Nice to have
• Knowledge of German patent prosecution, including office actions and amendments before the German Patent and Trade Mark Office (DPMA) or the EPO.
• An engineering or science background (mechanical, electrical, chemical, biotech, etc.).
• Experience with CAT tools such as SDL Trados or memoQ.
• Experience working in an IP firm or a patent translation agency.
