R&D; Engineer – Electronics and Embedded Systems

Company: Perleybrook Labs

Location: Kochi, Kerala

Employment: Full time, in office

Department: Hardware R&D;

Experience: 3–5 years of relevant hands-on experience preferred

Reporting to: VP – Hardware & Application Engineering

Role overview

We are looking for an engineer with hands-on experience in electronic circuit design, PCB development, board bring-up and embedded Linux systems.

The engineer will develop and improve hardware for industrial safety products, taking assigned designs from requirements and component selection through prototyping, validation and production handover. The role involves working closely with the Senior R&D; Engineer, supporting an Associate R&D; Engineer and collaborating with Software, Production, Procurement and Field teams.

Key responsibilities

- Translate product requirements into circuit designs, component specifications and testable engineering requirements.
- Design schematics and PCB layouts, select components and prepare BOMs, Gerbers, assembly drawings and manufacturing files.
- Define appropriate PCB stackups and layout constraints, considering signal integrity, grounding, power distribution, protection, thermal performance and manufacturability.
- Bring up newly assembled boards, verify circuit operation, diagnose faults and implement design corrections.
- Configure and troubleshoot embedded Linux systems, including flashing, boot issues, system logs, peripheral configuration and connectivity.
- Integrate cameras, sensors, displays, communication modules and other peripherals.
- Develop or modify scripts, test utilities, interface code and relevant microcontroller firmware.
- Define wiring harnesses, connector pinouts and cable specifications. Review mechanical drawings and coordinate PCB, enclosure and mounting fitment.

- Prepare test plans and conduct functional, stability, power and thermal testing. Investigate field failures and verify corrective actions.
- Evaluate new technologies and components, resolve technical queries with vendors and coordinate prototype fabrication.
- Maintain revision-controlled design files, code, test reports, application guides and production release documentation.
- Support production handover, occasional site validation and technical troubleshooting.

Essential skills and experience

- Demonstrated ownership of electronic board development, including schematic design, PCB layout, prototype bring-up and testing.
- Strong electronics fundamentals covering power supplies, analog and digital circuits, component ratings, protection, grounding and decoupling.
- Proficiency in KiCad, Altium Designer or an equivalent PCB design tool, with willingness to work in the company’s design environment.
- Understanding of PCB design rules, return paths, power and ground planes, manufacturing constraints and assembly requirements.
- Hands-on experience with embedded Linux platforms, including board bring-up, peripheral integration and system troubleshooting.
- Practical experience with relevant interfaces such as UART, I²C, SPI, GPIO, USB, Ethernet, CAN and RS485.
- Working knowledge of Python or shell scripting and the ability to understand and modify relevant C/C++ code.

- Ability to diagnose faults using an oscilloscope, multimeter, bench power supply and relevant diagnostic tools.
- Ability to interpret datasheets, schematics and mechanical drawings, including PCB dimensions, mounting arrangements and connector clearances.
- Clear technical documentation, familiarity with version control and the ability to complete assigned development work with appropriate design reviews.
- Ability to use AI tools for engineering research, coding, testing and documentation while independently verifying technical recommendations and generated outputs.

Preferred experience

- Successful design and bring-up of four-layer PCBs.
- Camera integration, device trees, embedded module carrier boards or controlled-impedance routing.
- Mechanical CAD experience using Autodesk Fusion, SolidWorks, Creo, FreeCAD or an equivalent tool.
- Industrial electronics development, including EMC/ESD considerations, electrical noise, thermal management and environmental testing.
- Practical integration or deployment of AI models on embedded hardware.
- Experience transferring designs into production and guiding junior engineers.

Education

BE/BTech in Electronics, Electrical, Instrumentation or a related discipline, or a relevant diploma supported by strong practical design and development experience.

Selection process

Assessment will focus on demonstrated engineering capability and completed projects. Candidates should be able to explain a board they personally designed and tested, their contribution to an embedded Linux system and a technical failure they diagnosed using measurements.

The technical assessment will include a schematic or PCB review and practical troubleshooting scenarios. Non-confidential or anonymised project examples are welcome.
