About this role

You will own the complete optical and mechanical design of a family of ruggedised electro-optical sights for defence use, including thermal imaging, day-camera and combined multi-sensor variants. That covers designing the lens systems and the housings, mounts, alignment features and sealing that hold them, and making sure optical performance survives recoil, vibration, temperature extremes and field handling.

You need working depth in both optics and mechanical design. This is not a CAD-only or simulation-only role. Your designs will be built, aligned, tested and taken to field trials.

What you'll be doing

Optical design

- Define optical specifications (focal length, FOV, aperture, resolution, MTF targets) from system requirements and detector or sensor parameters
- Design and optimise lens systems for thermal (LWIR/MWIR) and visible/NIR channels using Zemax or CODE V
- Select optical materials, coatings and lens configurations for performance, weight, cost and manufacturability
- Carry out tolerance analysis, stray light and ghost analysis, and athermalisation studies
- Work with optical vendors on lens fabrication, coating and inspection, and review test reports

Opto-mechanical design

- Design lens barrels, optical mounts, detector and sensor housings, and focus and adjustment mechanisms
- Translate optical designs into manufacturable, rugged mechanical structures
- Plan alignment, boresight and collimation strategies,



including adjustment and locking features
- Design for sealing, ingress protection, thermal management and fogging control

Analysis and tolerancing

- Carry out tolerance stack-ups on optical and mechanical interfaces (centration, tilt, spacing, flatness)
- Run thermal, structural, shock and vibration analysis to check focus shift and alignment stability across temperature and recoil

Build, test and trials

- Support prototype builds, assembly, alignment and debugging in the lab and workshop
- Measure and verify optical performance (MTF, boresight, focus, FOV) and drive design fixes from the results
- Support environmental testing and field trials

Collaboration

- Work directly with the mechanical, electronics, embedded and software teams on integration
- Maintain structured documentation: drawings, BOMs, revision control and design review records

Mandatory skills and experience

- 2+ years of hands-on work in optical and opto-mechanical design of electro-optical or precision optical products (thermal imagers, camera modules, sights, optical payloads, laser systems or similar), including products taken through build and testing
- Strong command of optical design fundamentals: first-order optics, aberrations, MTF, tolerancing, stray light




- Hands-on experience with optical design software (Zemax OpticStudio or CODE V)
- Experience with optical mounting techniques: lens retention, spacers, shims, adhesives and compliant mounts
- Strong command of CAD (SolidWorks)
- Working knowledge of GD&T;, tolerance stack-ups and drawing release
- Knowledge of materials, surface treatments and coatings suitable for optical and rugged applications
- Experience with FEA tools (ANSYS or similar) for structural, thermal and vibration analysis
- Understanding of sealing, IP ratings and ruggedisation
- Understanding of CNC machining and precision manufacturing constraints
- Evidence of what you have personally designed, built, aligned and tested

Good to have

- Experience designing thermal imaging lenses (germanium, chalcogenide, athermal designs) or working with uncooled detectors and cores
- Experience with collimators, boresighting setups, MTF benches and optical test rigs
- Experience with weapon-mounted or recoil-exposed equipment
- Exposure to MIL-STD-810, JSS 55555, or defence trials and evaluations
