*Employment Type: Full-time
We’re looking for a hands-on Head Drone Engineer who can take a drone from an initial requirement to a fully assembled, tested aircraft ready for flight trials.
You will own the engineering and build process: deciding how the drone should be built, selecting the right parts, sourcing components, assembling the aircraft, configuring its systems, and troubleshooting problems. You will work alongside a dedicated pilot for flight testing and performance improvements.
Key Responsibilities
- Translate project requirements—including payload, flight time, range, and operating conditions—into practical drone designs and build plans.
- Select compatible components, including frames, arms, motors, propellers, electronic speed controllers (ESCs), batteries, flight controllers, GPS modules, sensors, and telemetry systems.
- Prepare bills of materials, estimate build costs, identify suppliers, and manage component sourcing.
- Independently assemble drones from individual components, including mechanical assembly, soldering, wiring, power distribution, and system integration.
- Configure flight controller firmware, calibrate sensors, and set up communications and failsafe settings.
- Diagnose and resolve mechanical, electrical, firmware configuration, and integration issues.
- Conduct ground checks and work with the pilot during flight trials to identify problems and improve performance.
- Maintain build documentation, wiring diagrams, component lists, configuration records, and maintenance procedures.
- Improve drone reliability,
flight performance, and ease of repair.
Required Skills and Experience
- Demonstrated hands-on experience building, assembling, troubleshooting, or repairing drones.
- Strong understanding of drone components, their compatibility, and how they affect flight performance.
- Practical skills in soldering, wiring, mechanical assembly, and fault diagnosis.
- Experience configuring and calibrating flight controllers and related systems.
- Ability to select suitable parts based on technical requirements and budget.
- Ability to independently take a build from a project brief through assembly, troubleshooting, and flight testing.
- Clear communication, valuable documentation habits, and a careful approach to workshop and flight-test safety.
Preferred Experience
- Familiarity with ArduPilot or PX4, and ground-control software such as Mission Planner or QGroundControl.
- Experience reviewing flight logs and tuning drone performance.
- Familiarity with CAD, 3D printing, custom mounts, or frame modifications.
- Experience integrating payloads, cameras, or additional sensors.
What Success Looks Like
Given a project brief, you can determine the build approach, select and source the right components, assemble and configure the drone, resolve technical issues, and support the pilot through successful flight trials.
How to Apply
Send your résumé and a short description of drones you have personally built or repaired to [
[email protected]]. Please include photos, videos, or project links where available, and explain your specific contribution to each build.
