Job Purpose To ensure safe, efficient, and uninterrupted operation of the metal scrap shredding and baling press plant during the assigned shift. The role involves managing shift manpower, monitoring equipment performance, coordinating with the maintenance team, achieving production targets, maintaining quality standards, and ensuring compliance with safety and environmental requirements.

Key Responsibilities

Plant Operations & Production

- Supervise day-to-day shift operations of the metal scrap shredding plant, baling presses, scrap feeding systems, conveyors, material handling equipment, and associated machinery.
- Ensure achievement of shift-wise production targets while maintaining operational efficiency and product quality.
- Monitor the performance of shredders, baling presses, conveyors, hydraulic systems, and other critical equipment.
- Ensure proper feeding of scrap material and smooth flow of material through the production process.
- Coordinate the operation of material handling equipment, including excavators, pay loaders, and other mobile equipment, as required.
- Minimize equipment downtime, production losses, material spillage, and operational bottlenecks.
- Ensure proper segregation, processing, and storage of scrap and shredded material as per the prescribed specifications.

Manpower Management

- Allocate duties to operators, helpers, fitters, riggers, gas cutters,



and other shift personnel.
- Ensure adequate manpower availability and effective utilization during the assigned shift.
- Monitor employee attendance, discipline, punctuality, and adherence to shift schedules.
- Provide on-the-job guidance to operators and helpers to improve productivity and operational safety.
- Ensure proper shift handover, including production figures, equipment status, breakdowns, pending jobs, and safety-related observations.

Equipment Monitoring & Maintenance Coordination

- Monitor equipment operating parameters, including motor load, hydraulic pressure, temperature, vibration, abnormal noise, and conveyor performance.
- Identify equipment abnormalities and coordinate with the electrical and mechanical maintenance teams for timely corrective action.
- Ensure that routine inspections, cleaning, lubrication, and preventive maintenance activities are carried out as per the prescribed schedule.
- Report breakdowns promptly and maintain records of downtime, breakdown causes, and corrective actions.
- Ensure that equipment is not operated under unsafe conditions or without required safety guards and interlocks.
- Coordinate maintenance activities during shutdowns and ensure secure restoration of equipment after maintenance.

Safety, Health & Environment

- Ensure strict compliance with plant safety procedures, SOPs, permit-to-work requirements, and applicable statutory regulations.
- Conduct toolbox talks and shift safety briefings, and ensure that employees use the prescribed personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Ensure safe handling of scrap, including the identification of gas cylinders, closed containers, hazardous materials, and other potentially dangerous items.




- Ensure that shredders and associated equipment are operated only when required safety systems, including water sprinklers and dust-control arrangements, are functional.
- Prevent unauthorized entry into operational areas and ensure safe movement of vehicles, equipment, and personnel.
- Report accidents, near misses, unsafe acts, and unsafe conditions immediately and support incident investigations.
- Maintain housekeeping standards and ensure proper disposal and management of process residue and waste.

Quality & Process Control

- Ensure that shredded and baled scrap meets the prescribed customer and process specifications.
- Monitor bale size, density, quality, and consistency, wherever applicable.
- Minimize contamination, foreign materials, and process-related material losses.
- Coordinate with the quality team and management to resolve process and material-quality issues.

Reporting & Documentation

- Maintain shift-wise records of production, equipment utilization, downtime, manpower deployment, and material movement.
- Prepare shift production reports and submit them to the reporting manager within the prescribed timeline.
- Maintain equipment inspection checklists, breakdown reports, safety observations, and shift handover records.
- Report abnormal consumption of electricity, hydraulic oil, lubricants, and other consumables.
- Highlight operational constraints and recommend corrective and preventive measures for improving productivity.

Qualifications

- Diploma or Degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Production, or a related engineering discipline.
- Candidates with relevant technical qualifications and substantial experience in metal scrap processing may also be considered.

Experience

- Preferably 5–8 years of experience in industrial plant operations, scrap processing, metal shredding, baling presses, steel plants, recycling facilities, or heavy engineering industries.
- Experience in handling shift operations, hydraulic baling presses, shredders, conveyors, and material handling equipment will be preferred.
- Experience in manpower supervision, breakdown coordination, and industrial safety is essential.
