Job Description: OT Assistant – Eye Hospital

1. Job Summary

The OT Assistant is responsible for assisting ophthalmic surgeons, nurses, and other clinical staff in the smooth functioning of the operation theatre. The role includes preparing the OT, maintaining sterility, handling surgical instruments and equipment, assisting during eye surgeries, and ensuring patient safety and infection control.

2. Key Roles and Responsibilities

1. Operation Theatre Preparation

- Prepare the operation theatre before scheduled eye surgeries.
- Ensure the OT table, microscope, surgical lights, and other equipment are ready.
- Check the availability of sterile instruments, surgical consumables, and supplies.
- Maintain the cleanliness and readiness of the OT.

2. Surgical Assistance

- Assist ophthalmic surgeons and nursing staff during procedures as directed.
- Arrange and provide surgical instruments and consumables when required.
- Assist in preparing equipment for cataract, glaucoma, retina, and other ophthalmic surgeries, according to training and authorization.
- Handle instruments carefully and ensure they are available for each procedure.

3. Patient Preparation

- Assist in transferring patients to and from the operation theatre.
- Help position patients safely on the OT table.
- Verify patient identity and procedure details with the authorized clinical team.
- Support pre-operative and post-operative patient care as instructed by nursing staff.

4. Sterilization and Infection Control

- Clean, disinfect, and prepare reusable instruments according to hospital protocols.
- Follow sterilization procedures and maintain proper records.
- Adhere to hand hygiene, PPE, biomedical waste management,



and infection prevention policies.
- Maintain sterile conditions and report any contamination immediately.

5. Equipment and Inventory Management

- Check the functioning and cleanliness of ophthalmic equipment.
- Maintain adequate stocks of surgical consumables and instruments.
- Report damaged equipment, shortages, and maintenance requirements.
- Maintain records of instrument sterilization, OT supplies, and equipment checks as assigned.

6. Post-Operative OT Activities

- Assist with cleaning and preparing the OT for the next procedure.
- Ensure used instruments are sent for appropriate cleaning and sterilization.
- Dispose of biomedical waste according to hospital guidelines.
- Support safe transfer of patients to the recovery area.

7. Documentation and Teamwork

- Maintain accurate OT checklists and assigned registers.
- Coordinate with surgeons, nurses, CSSD, housekeeping, and other departments.
- Follow hospital policies, patient confidentiality requirements, and safety protocols.
- Report incidents, equipment failures, and patient safety concerns promptly.

3. Educational Qualifications

- Minimum qualification: 10th or 12th pass, depending on hospital policy.
- Preference for candidates with an OT Technician, Diploma in Operation Theatre Technology, or relevant healthcare training.
- Basic knowledge of sterilization, infection control, and ophthalmic surgical instruments is desirable.

4. Skills and Competencies

- Knowledge of OT preparation and sterile techniques.
- Familiarity with ophthalmic instruments and equipment.
- Valuable communication and teamwork skills.
- Attention to detail and ability to follow instructions.
- Time management and ability to work under pressure.
- Commitment to patient safety, hygiene, and confidentiality.

5. Experience

- Freshers may be considered if they have relevant training.
- Previous experience in an eye hospital or ophthalmic operation theatre is preferred.

Pay: ₹25,000.00 - ₹38,000.00 per month
