Planning your NCLEX-RN preparation as an internationally educated nurse? Start by checking the registration requirements for the country and nursing regulator you want to apply to. The National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses, or NCLEX-RN, is a licensing test administered by nursing regulators in the US and Canada. It is also used as the multiple-choice Registered Nurse exam in Australia’s assessment process for qualified foreign nurses.
The NCLEX-RN evaluates a candidate’s knowledge, clinical judgement and decision-making for safe, entry-level practice as a registered nurse.
Computerised Adaptive Testing (CAT) assesses nursing knowledge, patient safety, clinical judgement and decisions across clinical scenarios.
NCLEX-RN pathways for international nurses
United States
The State Board of Nursing where you want to apply will determine the precise process for nurses with foreign education.
Typical procedures could consist of:
Select Your State Evaluate or Verify Your Credentials Fulfil State-Specific Requirements Apply to the State Board of Nursing Register for the NCLEX-RN Get Authorisation to Test (ATT) Take the NCLEX-RN Fulfil Remaining Licensure Requirements
State-by-state requirements may include background checks, fingerprinting, Social Security number requirements, credential verification, English language proficiency requirements, and other paperwork.
Crucial: Consult the nursing board of the state in which you plan to practise to confirm the most recent regulations.
Canada
Before becoming eligible to take the NCLEX-RN, internationally educated nurses who want to work as registered nurses in Canada may need to finish a credentialing and registration process.
Typical pathways could consist of:
Select Your Province/Territory Credential Assessment/NNAS Process Where Applicable Apply to the Appropriate Nursing Regulator Fulfil Language and Registration Requirements NCLEX-RN Fulfil Additional Registration Requirements
For many nurses with foreign education who want to register in participating Canadian provinces, the National Nursing Assessment Service (NNAS) is a crucial first step. While Quebec and the territories have separate systems, the procedure and requirements can differ by province.
Note: Provincial nursing authorities decide final registration standards and eligibility.
Australia
The pathway may include an evaluation of qualifications and,
for candidates who must finish the Outcomes-Based Assessment (OBA), the pertinent test stages for eligible internationally qualified Registered Nurses who are referred to Australia’s assessment procedure.
A typical route could consist of:
Ahpra Self-check/Assessment Orientation and Portfolio Requirements NCLEX-RN (MCQ for Registered Nurses) RN OSCE Registration Application
Depending on an applicant’s qualification and assessment stream, Australia’s internationally qualified nurse assessment procedure may vary. Before moving on to registration eligibility, applicants who must pass the OBA must finish the pertinent MCQ and OSCE requirements.
