Across 65 cities in 40 countries, we work alongside our clients as one team with a shared ambition to achieve extraordinary results, outperforming the competition, and redefine industries. We complement our tailored, integrated expertise with a vibrant ecosystem of digital innovators to deliver better, faster, and more enduring outcomes.
The firm established several functions in the Indian market early 2000s and its remit across functions has expanded over time. Since 2019, these functions have become part of Global Business Services (GBS).
Global Business

We are over 1000 business professionals – serving functions in operations, HR, finance, legal, tech, marketing, research, and data analytics – who support our offices globally. Our mantra of “shared innovation, seamless execution,” underpinned by a passion for results, teamwork, and creativity, helps Bain stay at the top of our game operationally.
WHAT MAKES US A GREAT PLACE TO WORK
We are proud to be consistently recognized as one of the world’s best places to work. We are currently the top-ranked consulting firm on Glassdoor’s Best Places to Work list and have earned the #1 overall spot a record seven times.
Extraordinary teams are at the heart of our business strategy, but these don’t happen by chance. They require intentional focus on bringing together a broad set of backgrounds, cultures, experiences, perspectives, and skills in a supportive and inclusive work environment. We hire people with exceptional talent and create an environment in which every individual can thrive professionally and personally.
WHO YOU’LL WORK WITH
You’ll work across all of Bain’s TSG software engineering teams working with Engineering Managers, Developers, and vendor delivery partners. These teams build and support Bain’s most strategic internal software systems, primarily enterprise-scale, browser-based or mobile applications with a global user base.
Teams combine internal developers with vendor-augmented developers, work in an Agile/kanban model, and increasingly use AI-assisted and agent-assisted development. You will also work closely with Information Security, infrastructure and cloud teams, and procurement.
WHAT YOU’LL DO The Systems Architect is a senior technical leadership role. The role is the technical authority across all engineering teams for software architecture, non-functional requirements (NFRs), secure development, testing, deployment, and the use of AI in engineering. The role sets standards, builds guardrails, makes tooling decisions, and acts as a technical evangelist, working through Engineering Managers and developers to create consistency across teams.
Where capacity allows, the role also takes on end-to-end delivery of selected projects. Percentages below are indicative and will flex with project delivery commitments.
Architecture and engineering standards (20%)
- Define and maintain a unified software architecture approach across all teams, including reference architectures, design patterns, integration and API standards, and architecture decision records.
- Act as design authority for significant new systems and major upgrades, reviewing solution designs for fit with standards, scalability, resilience, security, and cost.
- Define NFRs such as performance, availability, scalability, security, observability, and maintainability, and make sure they are built into designs, estimates, and development practices.
- Guide data architecture choices across SQL, NoSQL,
and vector databases so teams make consistent, well-reasoned decisions.
- Advise on the modernization, rationalization, or retirement of legacy applications, working with AMS leads and Engineering Managers on technical roadmaps and technical debt.
- Ensure vendor-augmented teams follow the same architecture and engineering standards as internal teams.
NFR and system inventory (10%)
- Own the NFR system, templates, and process by which NFRs are captured, validated, tracked, and verified for every product.
- Own the inventory of all applications and legacy systems, and keep it current and complete, covering technology stack, ownership, dependencies, hosting, and lifecycle status.
- Drive up-to-date documentation of software systems and processes, and set documentation standards for teams.
Secure software development | AI-enabled engineering and agent guardrails (25%)
- Define and own secure software development practices across teams, including threat modeling, secure design review, dependency and supply chain security, secrets management, and code scanning.
- Work with InfoSec to turn policy into practical engineering controls and serve as the technical escalation point for security questions.
- Set controls for the secure use of AI-generated code and AI agents, including protection of data and prompts.
- Review vulnerability and remediation trends across teams and drive corrective action.
- Define standards for the use of code assistants and AI coding agents, including approved tools, usage practices, review of AI-generated code, and how impact is measured.
- Design and maintain guardrails for AI agents, including permissions, handling of data and prompts, human review checkpoints, auditability, and failure handling.
- Promote AI-driven development lifecycle (AIDLC) practices and their adoption across teams.
- Define architecture patterns for LLM-based applications, including retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), vectorization and embeddings, vector databases, evaluation, cost, and latency.
- Track emerging AI risks and ensure approaches align with Bain’s governance and responsible AI expectations.
Cloud, deployment, and DevOps (15%)
- Finalize and govern deployment approaches across Azure, GCP, and AWS, including criteria for workload placement, workplace strategy, and infrastructure as code.
- Standardize CI/CD pipelines, release strategies, and observability practices across teams.
- Partner with infrastructure and cloud teams on cost, resilience, and disaster recovery.
- Verify that NFRs are met in deployed environments.
Tooling, licensing, procurement, and proofs of concept (10%)
- Make and recommend tool choices across IDEs, code assistants, testing, CI/CD, security, and observability, with clear evaluation criteria and rationale as and when there is a decision point.
- Manage tool licenses for all teams, internal and vendor-augmented, and optimize usage and cost.
- Lead procurement of tools, including requirements, vendor evaluation, commercial input, and onboarding, with procurement and reporting to the TS leadership.
- Lead or sponsor proof of concept on emerging technologies for different teams, with clear success criteria and a recommendation to adopt, defer, or drop. Present findings to the wider engineering group.
Technical mentoring (15%)
- Act as technical evangelist across teams through communities of practice, tech talks, and architecture forums, building shared understanding of standards and the reasons behind them.
- Communicate architecture decisions clearly to technical and non-technical audiences, including senior stakeholders.
- Coach and mentor developers and Engineering Managers on design, architecture, and technical decision-making to build architecture capability across the group.
- Report to the TS leadership and give Engineering Managers regular feedback on the technical health of teams.
- Role model assertive communication in crucial conversations, and listen to understand the needs of teams.
Project delivery (5%)
- Take end-to-end ownership of selected delivery projects when availability permits, from architecture through build, testing, release, and handover.
- Report to the TS leadership on project selection, and make sure standards and governance responsibilities are not compromised.
- Build hands-on prototypes and technical spikes to validate approaches before wider adoption.
What success looks like
- Teams share consistent architecture, NFR, testing, security, and deployment approaches, and Engineering Managers and developers treat the Systems Architect as the reference point.
- AI coding tools and agents are used safely and productively, within clear guardrails.
- NFRs are captured and verified for every product, and App Stack AI is complete and trusted.
- Tool licenses and procurement are managed with clear ownership, and proofs of concept lead to timely adoption decisions.
