Role Summary
As a Content Lead for Forward Deployed Engineering, you'll own the entire learning journey that prepares students to work as engineers embedded with customers: taking a vague business problem, scoping it, building a working solution on real systems and messy data, and getting it adopted. That includes designing the curriculum, writing reading materials, building assessments, creating lab exercises, and developing projects that mirror real customer engagements.
This is a hands-on creation role. You'll spend most of your time building, testing, and improving content. You'll also be running mock engagements and building customer-style solutions yourself, because this work is learned from doing it under ambiguity, and content written by someone who hasn't sat with a customer shows. If you can't do it, you can't teach it.
If you're someone who can take a half-formed problem statement, turn it into a scoped build, ship a working integration against messy data, and then explain both the technical choices and the customer conversation clearly enough that a student gets it, this is your role.
What You Will Do
- Design semester-wise curriculum and decide how topics are structured, sequenced, and paced across the academic calendar, from technical foundations to full engagement simulations.
- Keep the content aligned with what the industry hires for. Map topics to real roles such as forward deployed engineer, solutions engineer, implementation engineer, and technical consultant.
- Continuously evolve the content strategy based on what's working, what's not, and how the role is changing as AI platforms and enterprise tooling evolve.
- Write clear, in-depth reading materials that students can learn from independently. Not job-description summaries or buzzword overviews, but well-structured explanations with realistic scenarios, working examples, and the reasoning behind each decision.
- Design problems that test judgment as well as code, such as scoping an ambiguous request, choosing between a quick fix and a proper build, debugging an integration, or deciding what to tell a stakeholder.
- Build question banks following ByteXL's quality standards for difficulty distribution, answer balance, and auto-gradability.
- Create hands-on lab exercises that progressively build complexity, from API integration, data cleaning, and SQL to building and deploying a working solution against a realistic customer environment.
- Design capstone projects that simulate a full engagement: requirements discovery, scoping, build, deployment, documentation, and handoff, with deliberately messy data, shifting requirements, and legacy systems.
- Build the sample engagements yourself regularly to confirm they're doable, realistic, and teach the intended lessons.
- Teach the non-code skills as part of the technical work, including requirements gathering, written updates, demos, expectation setting, and writing documentation that a customer's team can use.
- Stay current with the tools, platforms, and practices forward deployed teams use, and decide what is worth teaching.
- Try new ways of teaching and building content. If something could work better, prototype it and make the case.
What We're Looking For
Must Have
- B.Tech, M.Tech, MCA, or equivalent in Computer Science or a related field.
- 3-5 years of hands-on engineering experience, including at least 2 years working directly with customers or internal stakeholders on problems that weren't fully specified. Titles vary (forward deployed engineer, solutions engineer, implementation engineer, technical consultant), so we care about what you did, not what you were called.
- Has taken at least one solution from a vague request to production and stayed through adoption. You scoped it, built it, deployed it, and dealt with what broke afterward.
- Robust Python,
with working fluency in TypeScript or JavaScript, and the ability to read unfamiliar and legacy code quickly.
- Strong SQL, and has cleaned, reconciled, and made sense of data that was incomplete, inconsistent, or documented wrongly.
- Has built integrations against real third-party or legacy systems, including REST APIs, webhooks, auth flows, rate limits, retries, and failure handling.
- Can deploy and debug your own work using Git, Docker, a major cloud platform, CI/CD, and logs and monitoring. You can tell why something works locally and fails in production.
- Has built with LLM APIs in a real solution, covering prompting, structured outputs, retrieval, and basic evaluation. You also know when an LLM is the wrong tool.
- Has written for or presented to non-technical stakeholders, such as scoping documents, status updates, demos, or handover documentation that a customer's team actually used. You'll be asked to share a sample.
- Has mentored, trained, onboarded, or written technical content for others, and can show something you wrote or taught.
- Can build realistic practice environments such as mock customer systems, messy datasets, and ambiguous briefs. These need to be safe for students to work in and still assessable fairly.
- Can explain how you'd scope a vague request, or why an integration that passed testing fails in production, clearly enough that a second-year student follows the reasoning, not just the answer.
- Works independently without needing constant direction.
Nice to Have
- Experience on a forward deployed or solutions team at a startup or platform company.
- Experience with enterprise systems such as CRMs, ERPs, data warehouses, and BI tools.
- Depth in an industry vertical such as banking, healthcare, manufacturing, or logistics.
- Experience with access control, security, and compliance in customer deployments.
- Experience designing scenario-based assessments or grading rubrics.
- Public writing, open-source work, or conference talks about applied engineering.
