Habitat Robotics

India

About Habitat Robotics Habitat Robotics is an early-stage nonprofit working at the intersection of robotics, artificial intelligence, and wildlife conservation. Across India, conservation teams face increasingly complex challenges, from human–wildlife conflict to monitoring biodiversity across vast and difficult-to-access landscapes. While advances in sensing, robotics, and AI have created powerful new possibilities, many of these technologies remain inaccessible or impractical for frontline conservation teams. We are working to change that. Habitat Robotics partners with conservation organizations, researchers, and field practitioners to build and deploy practical, field-ready technologies. Our work includes thermal-drone monitoring of elephant movements, connected wildlife sensing systems, AI-powered species detection, and tools that turn ecological data into actionable information. We are currently developing and testing our systems with conservation partners in India, with the long-term ambition of making advanced conservation technology accessible, affordable, and usable at scale, globally. About the Role
We are looking for a Field Deployment Engineer — Robotics, Sensing & Conservation Technology to join our founding team and help bring conservation technology from prototype to real-world deployment. This is a hands-on engineering role spanning electronics, sensor integration, field robotics, and deployment operations. You will work closely with the founders, technical engineers, and conservation partners to assemble, configure, test, deploy, and maintain sensing and robotics systems in real conservation landscapes. Our systems range from connected camera traps and acoustic sensors to aerial imaging platforms, edge AI devices, communication networks, and field power infrastructure. You might be assembling a solar-powered wildlife monitoring station, configuring a cellular camera trap, testing an edge computing device, conducting an aerial imaging mission, troubleshooting connectivity in a remote forest landscape, or helping a conservation partner operate newly deployed equipment. We are looking for someone who enjoys building physical systems, is comfortable working outside a conventional laboratory workplace, and can independently solve engineering problems under real-world constraints.

Key Responsibilities
Hardware Assembly & Systems Integration
• Assemble, configure, and test field-ready sensing and monitoring systems, including camera traps, acoustic sensors, edge computing devices, and communication equipment.
• Develop practical deployment procedures, maintenance schedules, and field troubleshooting guides. Field deployment & Maintenance

• Plan and execute the installation and operation of sensing systems in forests, agricultural landscapes, and other conservation environments.
• Conduct site assessments to evaluate equipment placement, connectivity, power availability, environmental conditions, and accessibility.
• Troubleshoot hardware, power, connectivity, and software integration issues during field operations.
• Train conservation partners and local field teams to operate and maintain deployed systems.
• Collect and organize imagery, acoustic recordings, sensor telemetry, equipment logs, and associated field metadata.
• Configure and troubleshoot communication technologies such as cellular networks, Wi-Fi, LoRa, and other wireless systems. Drone & Aerial Sensing Operations
• Assist with aerial mapping, thermal monitoring, image capture, and associated data collection workflows.
• Support the integration of aerial imagery, telemetry, and other sensor data into Habitat's monitoring and analysis workflows. Who We're Looking For Required qualifications
• Bachelor's degree or equivalent practical experience in Electronics, Electrical Engineering, Robotics, Mechatronics, Embedded Systems, Computer Engineering, or a related discipline.
• Approximately 2–5 years of relevant experience in hardware engineering, robotics, IoT systems, embedded systems, field instrumentation, or related areas.
• Hands-on experience assembling, testing, troubleshooting, and maintaining electronic or electromechanical systems.
• Practical experience conducting technical work in outdoor or field environments, including equipment setup, on-site troubleshooting, and adapting to limited infrastructure and challenging environmental conditions.
• Comfort using engineering tools such as multimeters, soldering equipment, connectors, power supplies, and diagnostic software.
• Strong practical problem-solving skills and an ability to work independently with limited supervision.
• Willingness to undertake frequent travel to remote field locations and work in variable environmental conditions.
• Genuine interest in wildlife conservation, environmental science, or technology for social impact. Preferred qualifications
• Experience deploying IoT devices, sensing systems, or robotics platforms outside laboratory environments.
• Familiarity with camera traps, acoustic sensors,

thermal cameras, GPS/GNSS modules, or environmental monitoring systems.
• Knowledge of cellular networking, LoRa, wireless telemetry, or remote connectivity systems.
• Familiarity with battery management, solar power, low-power electronics, and outdoor equipment enclosures.
• Experience with drones, aerial mapping, thermal imaging, or photogrammetry.
• Familiarity with Linux-based systems and basic networking diagnostics.
• Ability to communicate in Hindi or other Indian languages relevant to our field operations. Previous experience in wildlife conservation is not required. We place greater value on practical engineering skills, curiosity, reliability, and the willingness to learn in unfamiliar environments.

What We Offer
• Competitive compensation: ₹65,000–₹90,000 gross per month, depending on experience and demonstrated capabilities.
• Performance-based bonus: Eligibility for an annual bonus linked to clearly defined individual and organizational objectives, subject to organizational policy and available funding.
• Health and accident insurance: Organization-sponsored coverage in accordance with Habitat Robotics' employee benefits policy.
• Company-provided hardware: Access to the technical equipment required for the role.
• Remote-first work: Work remotely from India, with frequent travel to field sites, partner locations, and equipment testing facilities.
• Meaningful technical ownership: Join as one of the organization's earliest engineers and help shape its hardware architecture, deployment processes, and technical roadmap.
• Access to field technology: Work with drones, thermal cameras, sensor networks, embedded computing devices, and emerging conservation technologies.
• Cross-disciplinary collaboration: Work alongside engineers, AI researchers, conservation scientists, and field practitioners.
• Professional growth: Opportunities to develop expertise across field robotics, embedded systems, sensing, edge AI, and conservation technology. Why Join Habitat Robotics Habitat Robotics is at an exciting but early stage. We are building an organization from the ground up, testing technologies in real conservation settings, and working toward solutions that could eventually support conservation teams across India and beyond. This is not a role with a narrowly defined set of responsibilities or established playbooks. You'll have the prospect to help create those playbooks, shape the organization, and see the direct impact of your work. If you are energized by complex challenges, enjoy building things from scratch, and want to apply your skills to wildlife conservation, we'd love to hear from you.
