About the Role
Join SBS as a Senior DevOps Architect for Digital Core, a strategic product portfolio supporting mission-critical banking operations and real-time transaction processing. You will own the platform architecture and engineering practices that turn product innovation into secure, repeatable and operable software across SaaS, public-cloud, private-cloud and customer-controlled environments.
The mandate goes beyond tooling: create an industrialised product-delivery platform that improves engineering speed, production resilience, compliance evidence and the economics of operating software at scale.
This is a senior, high-impact technical leadership role with clear hands-on accountability: you will guide architecture and tackle technical debt, but also use modern enterprise-approved AI tools such as Claude, Codex and equivalent code models to produce deliverable platform components, automation, infrastructure code, pipeline assets and engineering patterns directly.z
Why This Role Matters
Power a strategic product platform. Build the delivery and runtime foundations for Digital Core as SBS expands modular products and SaaS deployments and advances towards a more recurring, scalable software model.
Operate where reliability has real consequences. Engineer platforms for regulated, high-volume and time-critical financial services, including instant and account-to-account payments.
Make progressive transformation possible. Enable banks to introduce modular capabilities and run new repeatable environments, controlled releases and strong operational guardrails.
Create leverage across engineering. Convert security, observability, deployment, compliance and cost-control patterns into reusable self-service capabilities. Improve engineering throughput without trading away resilience, governance or customer choice of deployment model.
Shape AI-enabled software delivery. Operationalise governed use of modern AI models across infrastructure code, pipelines, testing, incident learning and documentation, while retaining deterministic controls and accountable human approval.
What You Will Do
Architect enterprise DevOps platforms. Design scalable, reliable and cost-aware architectures across AWS, hybrid and multi-cloud patterns where they create clear value.
Drive CI/CD excellence. Standardise secure delivery pipelines using GitLab CI/CD, Jenkins, Argo CD and related tooling, with progressive delivery, rollback and zero-downtime deployment strategies.
Automate infrastructure. Lead infrastructure-as-code using Terraform, Ansible, Helm and cloud-native templates. Establish reusable modules, policy controls and automated validation.
Apply AI-assisted DevOps. Use the latest approved AI models to generate and improve pipeline definitions, infrastructure code, policy-as-code, automation scripts, runbooks, test scenarios and architecture documentation.
Build protected AI workflows. Evaluate generated outputs for correctness, security, permissions, destructive actions,
cost and maintainability. Protect secrets and confidential data, require peer review, and keep deterministic testing and audit trails.
Engineer for real-time payments. Design deployment, scaling, resilience and recovery patterns for always-on transaction processing, including controlled degradation, idempotency-aware operations and rapid restoration.
Support flexible deployment. Establish common platform patterns across SaaS, public cloud, private cloud and customer-operated environments without fragmenting engineering standards or compliance evidence.
Champion governance and DevSecOps. Define guardrails, standards and controls aligned with GDPR, PCI DSS and PSD2. Integrate security scanning, provenance, approvals and compliance evidence into delivery workflows.
Lead container platforms. Drive Kubernetes and Docker architecture, workload scaling, tenancy, service discovery, Helm packaging and microservices deployment patterns.
Improve reliability and observability. Implement metrics, logs, traces and alerting using Prometheus, Grafana, ELK and cloud-native services. Apply SRE practices, including SLIs, SLOs, error budgets, incident response and resilience testing.
Advance platform engineering. Create self-service golden paths and paved-road capabilities that improve developer experience while maintaining governance.
Deliver hands-on technical outcomes. Personally design, write, review and ship meaningful platform assets, including infrastructure modules, CI/CD templates, automation scripts, policy checks, runbooks and reference implementations. This is not a hands-off advisory role.
Lead AI-enabled ways of working. Help teams adopt modern AI-assisted engineering practices, including prompt/context design, code generation, review discipline, validation workflows and safe reuse patterns, so the organisation changes how it delivers rather than simply adding new tools.
Build technical strength around you. Hire, coach and raise the bar for a strong group of hands-on technical engineers and architects, creating a culture where senior people lead by producing, pairing, reviewing and teaching—not only by steering from a distance.
Technology Landscape
Cloud and infrastructure: AWS, Terraform, Ansible, Helm and other recent technologies.
Delivery and platform: GitLab CI/CD, Jenkins, Argo CD, Docker, Kubernetes and GitOps.
Observability: Prometheus, Grafana, ELK and CloudWatch; OpenTelemetry experience is advantageous.
Security and governance: DevSecOps, policy-as-code, software supply-chain security, secrets management and regulatory controls.
Automation and development:
Python, Go and Bash; APIs and event-driven automation.
AI-enabled engineering: Enterprise-approved coding assistants and frontier models, model evaluation, prompt/context design, secure usage patterns and human-in-the-loop review.
Qualifications
Experience: 10+ years in IT, including 5+ years in DevOps/platform engineering and 3+ years in an architecture role, with evidence of delivering complex distributed platforms.
Cloud architecture: Deep expertise in at least one major cloud platform and strong working knowledge of multi-cloud and hybrid architecture patterns.
Infrastructure as code: Advanced proficiency with Terraform and Ansible, plus Helm and cloud-native infrastructure templates.
CI/CD and GitOps: Proven ability to design secure, reliable and efficient pipelines using tools such as GitLab CI/CD, Jenkins and Argo CD.

AI fluency: Hands-on use of current AI models for DevOps design and code generation, with the ability to benchmark outputs and implement approval, testing, privacy and audit controls.
Hands-on delivery mindset: Demonstrated ability to personally produce production-quality technical deliverables while operating at architect level, rather than relying only on recommendations, governance or delegation.
Change leadership: Experience helping engineering teams shift to new operating models, including AI-assisted development, platform engineering, DevSecOps and disciplined technical debt reduction.
Leadership: Strong communication, stakeholder management and mentoring skills, with the ability to drive alignment across engineering, operations, security and product teams.
Certifications: Relevant cloud, Kubernetes or DevOps certifications are advantageous, such as AWS Certified DevOps Engineer, Microsoft Certified: DevOps Engineer Expert, CKA or CKAD.
Success in This Role
Success means Digital Core can convert roadmap ideas into production outcomes faster and with greater confidence. You will reduce lead time and operational toil, strengthen availability and recovery, make compliance evidence repeatable, improve cloud and platform cost transparency, and establish responsible AI-assisted delivery as a governed engineering capability. Just as importantly, you will demonstrate hands-on technical leadership: producing deliverables yourself, showing teams how to use new AI tools safely and effectively, helping engineers adapt to new ways of working, and building a stronger technical bench through hiring, coaching and high standards.
