Piping Lead
FMCG / Food & Beverage Manufacturing Projects
- Role Purpose The Piping Lead is responsible for planning, coordinating, reviewing and delivering piping engineering and design for greenfield and brownfield FMCG, food, dairy and beverage projects. The role covers piping scope from concept and basic engineering through detailed design, procurement support, construction, commissioning and start-up, ensuring safe, hygienic, compliant, constructible and cost-effective solutions.
- Key Responsibilities
- Define the piping scope, design basis, deliverable list, execution plan, schedule, resource requirement and progress measurement method.
- Lead and coordinate piping engineers and designers; allocate work, provide technical guidance, review outputs and ensure timely completion.
- Review client requirements, tender documents, process inputs, P&IDs;, equipment data, site information and applicable project specifications.
- Prepare and review piping layouts, equipment layouts, routing studies, nozzle orientations, isometrics, support requirements and typical details.
- Prepare and review piping material specifications, valve specifications, line lists, tie-in lists, MTO / BOQ, material requisitions and technical bid evaluations.
- Identify critical lines and define the flexibility / stress-analysis requirement; review stress reports, support philosophy and equipment nozzle loads.
- Lead 30%, 60% and 90% 3D model reviews covering safety, hygiene, access, operability, maintainability, clash-free routing and constructability.
- Coordinate piping interfaces with process, mechanical, civil / structural, electrical, automation, HSE, quality, procurement, construction and commissioning teams.
- Conduct site surveys, verify existing conditions, manage brownfield tie-ins and provide engineering support during construction and commissioning.
- Monitor engineering quality, schedule, man-hours, technical risks, changes, deviations and interdisciplinary actions; report concerns with recommended solutions.
- Support bids and proposals through scope assessment, assumptions, exclusions, deliverable estimation, man-hour estimates and technical clarifications.
- Interface with clients, vendors and contractors and review vendor drawings and documents affecting piping design.
3. Piping Design Requirements for Food Industry
- Apply service-based piping material selection considering product contact, water quality, corrosion, pressure, temperature, installation environment, cleanability and lifecycle cost.
- Ensure hygienic design of product and CIP piping, including drainability, suitable slopes, minimum dead legs, cleanable routing, hygienic connections and avoidance of contamination traps.
- Provide appropriate segregation between product, cleaning chemicals, utilities,
drains and incompatible services.
- Consider thermal expansion, condensation control, insulation, vapour sealing, personnel protection, corrosion protection and external environment in the piping design.
- Ensure safe access for operation, valve handling, instrument maintenance, cleaning, inspection and future replacement.
- Use approved piping classes, standard details and components and document any project-specific deviation for review and approval.
- For brownfield work, use verified survey information and laser-scan / point-cloud data where available; plan tie-ins around safe isolation and production constraints.
4. Key Piping Deliverables
- Piping design basis, design criteria, piping material specifications and piping classes
- Equipment layouts, piping layouts, routing studies and nozzle-orientation inputs
- Piping GAs, isometrics, line list, tie-in list, valve list and specialty-item list
- Piping MTO / BOQ, material requisitions, technical bid evaluations and vendor-document reviews
- Critical-line list, pipe stress-analysis reports and piping-support requirements
- 3D model, model-review reports, clash-resolution records and interdisciplinary check comments
- Site survey reports, construction-query responses, field-change inputs and as-built documentation
5. Required Technical Knowledge
- 12–15 years of piping engineering and design experience, preferably with significant exposure to FMCG, food, dairy, beverage or consumer-product facilities.
- Strong knowledge of piping layout, material selection, valves, supports, insulation, stress analysis and constructability.
- Experience with product / hygienic piping and plant utilities such as water systems, chilled water, glycol, steam, condensate, compressed air, gases, drainage and chemical piping.
- Working knowledge of applicable project standards such as ASME B31.3, ASME BPE, EN 13480, relevant ISO / EN standards, EHEDG / 3-A hygienic principles, NFPA requirements and local statutory codes, as applicable.
- Experience in concept, basic engineering / FEED, detailed engineering, procurement support, construction and commissioning.
- Experience with brownfield projects, site surveys, tie-in planning and laser-scan / point-cloud-based design is preferred.
