Department: Product Design & R&D;
Brand: BathStory
Location: Bengaluru, India
Role: Industrial Designer (with 1-2 years experience)
About BathStory
BathStory is a new-age, design-led bathroom brand on a mission to rethink how Indian bathrooms look, feel, and function. We believe bathrooms deserve as much design attention as any other space in our homes. Yet, for too long, bath fittings and bathroom products have been largely just functional, uninspiring, or ridiculously expensive. We're here to change that.
Starting with shower partitions, we've been building a growing portfolio of thoughtfully designed bathroom products, including drains, and smart mirrors...and washbasins, accessories, faucets and more in the pipeline. As we expand, we're growing our in-house Product Design & R&D; team that will help shape the next generation of bathroom products for modern Indian homes.
About the role
We're looking for a curious, creative, and hands-on Industrial Designer who loves the intersection of design, functionality, and engineering. Someone who can look at an everyday product and ask, "Could this be designed better?"
You'll work with the team on developing recent products and improving existing ones, taking ideas from initial research and sketches to 3D models, prototypes, and eventually, production.
This is an opportunity to work across bathroom product categories, experiment with materials and manufacturing processes, and play a meaningful role in shaping the design language of a growing consumer brand. We're looking for someone who cares as much about how a product looks and feels as they do about how it functions.
1.Product Conceptualisation & Design Development
- Develop innovative product concepts, 3D CAD models, 2D engineering drawings, structural designs, product geometries, assembly concepts, dielines, and detailed technical specifications.
- Translate design concepts and product requirements into functional, production-ready designs.
- Explore new product forms, mechanisms, structures, and design solutions, particularly within the bathroom and home interiors space.
2. Engineering & Design Optimisation
- Translate customer, market, and business requirements into functional designs, considering usability, aesthetics, material properties, manufacturing feasibility, and dimensional tolerances.
- Apply Design for Manufacturing (DFM), Design for Assembly (DFA), and value engineering principles.
- Optimise product geometry, dimensions, material consumption, weight, strength, stackability, fitment, and functionality to improve performance and reduce production costs.
- Perform engineering calculations and basic simulations wherever required.
3.Prototyping & Product Validation
- Develop functional prototypes using 3D printing, sample fabrication, mock-ups, and other rapid prototyping techniques.
- Coordinate product trials, testing, and validation against functional, dimensional, and customer requirements.
- Evaluate prototype performance, identify design gaps, incorporate feedback, and iterate designs towards final production readiness.
4.Tooling & Manufacturing Coordination
- Collaborate with mould makers, die manufacturers, converters, fabrication vendors, and production teams on tooling requirements and manufacturing feasibility.
- Develop and review mould designs, cutting dies, creasing tools, tooling drawings, and related technical documentation.
- Participate in production trials, resolve design-related manufacturing challenges, and ensure design intent is maintained during production.
5.Cross-functional Collaboration
- Work closely with Product Innovation, R&D;, Sales, Marketing, Production, Procurement, and Quality teams to develop products that address market requirements and business objectives.
- Coordinate with external design agencies, manufacturers, and suppliers to explore new product structures, material applications, components, and manufacturing processes.
- Support the transition of products from design and development to sourcing, production, and commercialisation.
6. Design Documentation & Process Management
- Maintain accurate and updated CAD models, engineering drawings, dielines, Bills of Materials (BOMs), product specifications, and design revision records.
- Maintain an organised product design database and ensure proper version control.
- Track design milestones, support design reviews, standardise design practices, and contribute to product development SOPs.
- Contribute to intellectual property development through innovative product designs and engineering solutions.
7.Market Research & Design Exploration
- Research emerging design trends, market developments, competitor products, and innovative materials and technologies.
- Identify and curate existing products and design references that align with BathStory's product design vision.
- Continuously explore opportunities for product differentiation through form, function, material, detailing, and engineering.
What We Are Looking For
- A strong design sensibility with the ability to balance aesthetics and engineering.
- A hands-on problem solver who enjoys taking ideas from sketches to physical prototypes and production-ready products.
- Curiosity to explore new materials, manufacturing technologies, mechanisms, and product applications.
- Strong spatial visualisation and attention to detail.
- Ability to work independently, manage multiple design projects, and take ownership of deliverables.
- Good communication and collaboration skills to work with internal teams and external manufacturing partners.
- A genuine interest in product innovation, design research, and creating differentiated consumer products
Education & Experience
- Bachelor's degree in Industrial Design, Product Design, or a related discipline.
- 1–2 years of experience in industrial design, physical product design,
or consumer product development.
- Graduates from institutes such as NID, NIFT, MIT Institute of Design, Srishti Manipal Institute, IIT design programmes, or similar institutions are encouraged to apply, but this is not a requirement.
- Experience designing consumer products, furniture, home products, bathroom fittings, or hardware is an advantage.
- A strong portfolio demonstrating your design process, creativity, technical understanding, and ability to translate ideas into tangible products.
- Fresh graduates with a strong portfolio demonstrating practical product design and engineering capabilities may also be considered.
Technical Skills
- Proficiency in 3D CAD software such as Onshape, SolidWorks, Creo, or equivalent.
- Working knowledge of 2D drafting tools such as AutoCAD.
- Understanding of engineering drawings, GD&T;, dimensional tolerances, material properties, and manufacturing processes.
- Knowledge of rapid prototyping, 3D printing, product testing, and design validation.
- Understanding of DFM, DFA, value engineering, material optimisation, and cost reduction.
- Basic FEA and simulation knowledge will be an added advantage.
- Familiarity with manufacturing processes such as injection moulding, sheet metal fabrication, extrusion, casting, CNC machining, and other relevant processes is desirable.
Beyond the skills, You might be a outstanding fit if...
- You're naturally curious about everyday objects and how they could be designed and function better.
- You have a strong eye for form, proportion, materials, finishes, and the little details that make a product feel thoughtfully designed.
- You enjoy experimenting, making things, and getting your hands dirty with prototypes.
- You understand that great design isn't just about aesthetics. It's about solving real problems in interesting ways.
- You're comfortable moving between creative exploration and technical problem-solving.
- You enjoy taking ownership, learning quickly, and working in an environment where ideas can move from sketches to actual products.
- You're excited about building something new rather than simply working within an established product catalogue.
