Job Title – Application Engineer
Location – Leanwatts HQ, Hyderabad, India
About us:
At Leanwatts, we develop innovative power electronic solutions for electric mobility and energy applications through continuous research, engineering, and manufacturing. Our “Designed and Made in India” approach drives us to build reliable, high-performance products for the future of transportation and energy.
What is this role about?
We are looking for an Application Engineer to help customers integrate and validate Leanwatts’ EV chargers and power electronic products. You will translate application requirements into transparent specifications, support sample trials, and resolve integration issues with customers and our engineering teams. This is a hands-on, customer-facing engineering role covering product selection, charger–battery integration, testing, troubleshooting, and production handover.
You will work with hardware, firmware, quality, production, and sales teams to take customer applications from requirements to technical acceptance.
What you will do at Leanwatts:
● Customer Requirements: Capture battery chemistry, pack voltage, charging current, CAN requirements, connectors, installation constraints, and acceptance criteria. Maintain an agreed statement of requirements and clarify gaps before samples are prepared.
● Product Selection & Configuration: Match customer needs to suitable charger models and variants. Coordinate approved charging parameters, firmware versions, cable assemblies, and connector details with the responsible engineering teams.
● Charger & BMS Integration: Support CAN and non-CAN charger integration with battery packs and customer systems. Check protocol definitions, command and feedback signals, charging limits, and start/stop behaviour against agreed requirements.
● Sample Preparation & Trials: Coordinate sample readiness and configuration checks, support customer evaluation, and record test conditions and feedback. Track each application through open issues, retesting, and technical acceptance.
● Testing & Validation: Plan and execute application tests for charging behaviour, output regulation, protection responses, and thermal performance.
Capture measurements, CAN logs, and waveforms using approved procedures and safe test practices.
● Troubleshooting & Issue Closure: Reproduce customer issues, analyse test data, and distinguish configuration, communication, hardware, and firmware causes. Escalate with clear evidence and verify corrective actions before closure.
● Technical Documentation: Prepare application notes, customer-specific datasheets, test reports, configuration records, and integration guidance. Keep specifications, approved versions, and customer acceptance evidence traceable.
● Production Handover: Transfer approved application requirements, firmware and hardware versions, test criteria, and variant details to production and quality. Support first-batch checks and resolve handover gaps.
● Customer & Engineering Coordination: Explain technical findings clearly, track commitments and blockers, and coordinate with customers, suppliers, and internal teams. Feed recurring field issues and application needs into product improvements.
Must have requirements:
- Education & Required Experience
● Education: B.E. or B.Tech in Electronics, Electrical Engineering, or a related discipline; equivalent relevant practical experience may also be considered.
● Experience: Hands-on experience in application engineering, product testing, integration, or technical support for electrical or electronic products, with the ability to work systematically through technical problems.
● Relevant Work: Ability to explain a practical integration or troubleshooting project, including the requirements, measurements, root cause, corrective action, and verification.
2. Chargers & Battery Integration
● Electrical Fundamentals: Practical understanding of voltage, current, power, charging profiles, battery limits, and AC-DC or DC-DC conversion.
Ability to read datasheets, wiring diagrams, and basic schematics. ● Application Compatibility: Ability to assess charger and battery compatibility, connector pinouts, cable requirements, and operating limits. Recognise electrical and thermal risks and escalate unsafe or unclear conditions.
3. Test Tools & Communication Protocols
You should be comfortable setting up tests, collecting reliable evidence, and using it to explain product behaviour to customers and engineering teams.
● Test Equipment: Working ability with oscilloscopes, multimeters, power supplies, and electronic loads or battery test setups. Select suitable instruments and follow approved electrical safety procedures.
● CAN Communication: Ability to interpret CAN specifications and logs, check message IDs, scaling, timing, and basic bus configuration, and troubleshoot charger–BMS communication with firmware engineers.
4. Customer Support & Release Discipline
● Technical Communication: Clear written and verbal communication with customers and cross-functional teams. Explain test results, ask precise questions, and set expectations without making unapproved technical commitments.
● Verification & Documentation: Ability to write reproducible test procedures and concise reports, maintain application records, and distinguish confirmed findings from assumptions or issues still under investigation.
● Delivery & Change Control: Track multiple customer applications, prioritise open issues, and communicate risks. Maintain approved configuration and revision records and obtain sign-off before changes reach customers or production.
5. Preferred Advantages
● Relevant Products & Technologies: Direct experience with EV chargers, battery packs, BMS integration, automotive electronics, or power converters. Exposure to customer-site trials and product qualification is an advantage.
● Data Analysis & Improvement: Familiarity with test-data analysis, basic scripting or test automation, and structured root-cause methods. Experience turning field feedback into validated product or process improvements is an advantage.
