A Mechanical Design Engineer working in a sewerage treatment plant (STP) is responsible for designing, selecting, and supporting the installation of mechanical equipment used to treat wastewater safely and efficiently.

Duties & Responsibilities

- Workflow Projects with BOQ, Drawing & Specifications are available

1. Verify the mechanical BOQ in the contract with mechanical IFC drawing, compare and find out the deviation as well as analyze the BOQ and drawing based on the workability of the project and add additional item, if required. Intimate the variation to the Project Manager.

2. Provide details to the drafting team to prepare detailed shop drawing

3. Derive actual BOQ for construction and procurement purpose

4. Share the RFQ document with the Procurement department with clear specifications, checklist, compliance statement draft and technical document indexing

5. Collect material submittal in the format provided by the client including compliance statement against specification, review technical submittal and prepare for the submission to client

6. Preparation of testing and commissioning procedure and check list for construction team

- EPC Projects – Only client requirements are provided (no Engineering)

7. Prepare deliverable list for engineering and share with project team.

8. Prepare the schedule for engineering deliverables with estimated manhours

9. Sizing of mechanical equipment based on high level design provided by the process engineer basis—pumps, blowers, HVAC, fire systems. HVAC, Fire Fighting based on the Authorities regulations. Should be familiar with Civil Defense codes, ASHRAE, ASTM, ASME, AWWA

10. Making the pipe and valve and diffuser sizing based on the flow rate and high-level design provided by the process engineer.

11. Perform analysis (Surge, Stress, CFD, Structure) or get it done through third party, provide input to third party consultants to do surge analysis, stress analysis, CFD, HAP calculations and structural analysis.

12. Review and submit to client. (Basic knowledge about the software used to do such analysis and Knowledge about key factors for reviewing this analysis.)

13. Preparing technical data sheet for pump, valve, pipe, blower, HVAC, firefighting system, diffusers, grids.

Prepare the RFQ documents and share with Procurement team with Approved vendor list and with alternate vendor list.

15. Communicating with vendors for technical documents and support procurement team for technical points affecting commercial part.

16. Preparation of material submittal for submitting to client, reply to CRS

17. Provide technical input for drafting team to develop P&ID;, detailed drawings, civil guide drawings and shop drawings for construction

18. Review all drawings before releasing for construction, or for manufacturing

19. Making of detailed bill of quantity to purchase materials (with clear specifications and standards)

20. Ensure the drafting team provide clear and detailed builder’s drawing to civil team.

Role & responsibilities

A Mechanical Design Engineer working in a sewerage treatment plant (STP) is responsible for designing, selecting, and supporting the installation of mechanical equipment used to treat wastewater safely and efficiently.

1. Design Responsibilities

- Design mechanical systems used in wastewater treatment processes.
- Prepare equipment layouts, piping layouts, and mechanical drawings.

Design systems for:

- Pumps
- Blowers
- Mixers
- Screens
- Sludge handling equipment
- Aeration systems

Ensure designs meet project specifications, environmental regulations, and safety standards.

2. Equipment Selection

- Select suitable equipment based on plant capacity and process requirements.
- Evaluate vendor technical specifications.
- Prepare technical data sheets for equipment procurement.
- Review supplier drawings and approve them.

3. Engineering Calculations Perform calculations for:

- Pump sizing
- Pipe sizing
- Flow rates
- Pressure losses
- Power requirements
- Ensure equipment efficiency and reliability.

4. Drawings and Documentation Prepare and review:

- Material Submittal preparation
- Mechanical General Arrangement (GA) drawings




- Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&ID;)
- Equipment layout drawings
- Fabrication drawings

Use software like:

- AutoCAD
- SolidWorks
- Autodesk Inventor

5. Coordination

Coordinate with Civil engineers, Electrical engineers, Process engineers and Contractors. Ensure mechanical systems integrate properly with plant structures and controls.

6. Site Support

Provide technical support during:

- Equipment installation
- Commissioning
- Testing
