Recruited by: Sri Kumaran Children’s Home Educational Council | Bengaluru
About the Sri Kumaran Group of Institutions
The Sri Kumaran Group of Institutions is one of South Bengaluru’s oldest and largest school groups. It has grown over six decades and four generations of family stewardship from a single SSLC building at Tata Silk Farm. Today it educates about 8,300 students across seven campuses under the State, CBSE and ICSE boards. Our values are Sincerity, Kinship, Commitment and Integrity, and Harmony. For many of our families, the school bus is the first and last experience of the school each day, so we treat secure, punctual and compliant transport as part of what parents trust us with. You can find more information about us at www.kumarans.org.
Positions
- Transport and Fleet Manager: Tata Silk Farm and Doddakallasandra campuses
- Transport and Fleet Manager: Mallasandra campuses (CBSE, ICSE and Nursery)
Reports to: Deputy Director, with a secondary reporting line to the campus Principals
About the role
Each campus runs a substantial fleet of buses supplied by an outsourced operator, plus a smaller fleet of school-owned buses and cars. The operator manages its own drivers, attendants and vehicles day to day. Your job is to make sure the school’s safety standards are actually met. You will work closely with the operator’s counterpart, verify compliance through regular spot checks and records, and hold the operator to its agreement. You will directly oversee the school’s own vehicles and in-house drivers. You will also guide the Campus Transport Executive at each campus, who handles routes, student records and parent communication.
Key responsibilities
· Transport readiness:
Work with the operator to strengthen pre-trip and end-of-trip checks, including making sure no child is left on a bus. Carry out regular unannounced spot checks at dispatch and dispersal.
· Working with the operator: Act as the school’s main contact with the operator. Verify drivers and attendants before they start work, track punctuality and service, check invoices before payment, and lead regular performance reviews.
· School-owned fleet: Manage in-house drivers, rosters, vetting, training and discipline. Oversee servicing, fuel use and logbooks for school buses and cars.
· Routes and student safety: Approve route plans and changes. Make sure student lists are accurate and that young children are handed over only to authorised adults.
· Compliance and safeguarding: Keep track of fitness certificates, permits, insurance, speed governors, GPS and CCTV under the Supreme Court school-bus guidelines, Karnataka transport rules, the Karnataka Child Protection Policy and POCSO.
· Emergencies: Lead the transport response to breakdowns, accidents and disruptions, keep parents informed through the school’s channels, and run bus evacuation drills.
· Events and excursions: Plan and carry out safe transport for field trips, sports meets, examinations and school events.
· Campus Transport Executives: Set common procedures, train the executives, review their work weekly and handle the issues they escalate.
What we’re looking for
· A graduate qualification. A background in logistics, transport management or automobile engineering is an advantage.
· At least 10 years in passenger fleet management, transport logistics or institutional transport, including at least 5 years running a fleet and managing contractors.
· Experience managing an outsourced transport provider against a contract, ideally for a school group, a corporate employee transport service or a large institution.
· Working knowledge of the Motor Vehicles Act, Karnataka transport rules and the Supreme Court guidelines on school buses.
· Fluent Kannada and working English are required. Hindi is an additional asset.
· Comfortable with MS Excel, GPS tracking and transport management systems.
· A safety-first mindset, the habit of checking things personally rather than accepting assurances, integrity in dealing with vendors, and calm judgement under pressure.
· Available for early-morning dispatch, late dispersal, emergencies and school events.
Retired Armed Forces personnel are strongly encouraged to apply, particularly those with MTO, ASC, AOC, EME or unit transport administration experience.
What we offer
· Salary commensurate with experience and competence, with all relevant benefits
· A key safety role in a respected institution with six decades of history
· Professional growth through KATALYST, Kumarans’ competency-based development framework for operations staff
