Mechanical Engineer – Bioprocess Scale-Up

We need a mechanical engineer who can take a novel fermentation system from sketch to steel. We’re scaling a proprietary bioprocess from pilot to commercial plant, and the systems we need don’t come off the shelf. You’ll own the design, the drawings, the procurement, and the EPC supervision that turns it all into operating plants.

If you like watching your CAD become something you can walk through on a plant floor, this is your job.

What you’ll own

Design. End-to-end mechanical design of custom fermentation and cultivation systems, including non-standard vessel geometries, media preparation, and downstream handling equipment. 3D models, GA drawings, support structures, pipe racks, skid layouts. Hygienic design for a personal-care-grade product. FEA on the parts that matter. Digital twins to de-risk scale-up.

Execution. Own mechanical from FEED through commissioning. Supervise EPC contractors. Run FATs and SATs. Manage the civil-mechanical interface. Hit 95%+ uptime post-handover.

Procurement. Lead requirement generation. PRs, techno-commercial bid evaluations, Approved Vendor List, delivery dashboards.

Quality & safety. Indian Standards and ISO compliance. ITPs, WPS, MTCs. HAZOP, SOPs, preventive maintenance schedules. Cleanability and contamination control built into the design (CIP/SIP, drainability, surface finish).

Innovation. Work with biology and process teams to translate culture requirements (aeration, temperature, sterility, surface area, harvest)



into mechanical constraints. Joint design work with partners. Help leadership document novel IP.

Engineering skills we need

Strong:

- Autodesk Inventor or Fusion for 3D modeling, assemblies, drawings
- AutoCAD for 2D drafting, P&IDs;, GA drawings
- Piping design, stress analysis concepts, equipment layout
- Hygienic/sanitary design in SS 304/316L (ASME BPE or equivalent)
- EPC contractor supervision, hands-on project execution
- BOQ and BOM generation
- FEA on support structures and pressure components
- HAZOP and risk-based engineering

Nice to have:
- Fermentation vessels, bioreactors, or food/pharma process equipment
- Solids handling: harvesting, washing, size reduction, dewatering
- Sterile process design: CIP/SIP, steam systems, aseptic transfers
- Pipe stress analysis software and CFD tools
- SCADA/PLC from the mechanical interface side
- IoT-based predictive maintenance or condition monitoring
- PMP or formal project engineering credential

Who you are

- 5–8 years in mechanical design and project execution
- B.E./B.Tech in Mechanical Engineering from a robust school. M.Tech is a plus
- Personally executed at least one plant or skid from drawing to commissioning. Not a CAD jockey
- Comfortable on site in Bengaluru and at vendor/partner sites for a week at a time, coordinating with civil, electrical, and process teams
- Detail-obsessed in documentation. Calm in the field
- Able to keep proprietary process details confidential (NDA required)
