Software Engineer OpenConnect (OC) Role Overview We are looking for a Software Engineer – OpenConnect (OC) to join our Product & Technology organization and contribute to the development and modernization of our airline connectivity platform. OpenConnect provides the integration layer between our platform and airline systems, supporting critical airline workflows including shopping, pricing, booking, order management, ticketing, servicing, payment, and settlement. The engineer will work primarily on our modern Node.js/TypeScript microservices architecture, building scalable APIs and airline integrations while helping transition functionality from legacy OpenConnect components to the modern platform. The ideal candidate has strong backend development skills, experience building distributed systems and APIs, and familiarity with cloud-native development on AWS. Experience with airline systems, NDC, or EDIFACT messaging is highly desirable but not required.
Key Responsibilities
Design, develop, test, and maintain OpenConnect backend services and airline integrations. Develop scalable microservices using TypeScript and Node.js. Build and maintain APIs supporting airline shopping, pricing, booking, servicing, payment, and settlement workflows. Develop integration components and adapters connecting the OpenConnect platform with airline systems and external providers. Contribute to the modernization and migration of functionality from legacy OpenConnect components to the modern microservices architecture. Implement reusable integration patterns that allow airline-specific functionality to be isolated from core platform capabilities. Develop and maintain REST-based APIs and integrations using JSON and XML. Implement reliable error handling, retries, logging, tracing, and monitoring across distributed services.
Develop cloud-native applications running on AWS and Kubernetes/EKS. Containerize and deploy applications using Docker. Work with AWS services and platform components supporting highly available production applications. Develop automated unit and integration tests as part of the software development lifecycle. Participate in code reviews, architecture discussions, troubleshooting, and production support. Collaborate with product, QA, architecture, DevOps, and other engineering teams to deliver reliable airline connectivity solutions. Maintain technical documentation for APIs, integrations, services, and architectural decisions. Required Qualifications Strong software development experience with TypeScript and Node.js. Experience designing and developing backend services, REST APIs, and microservices. Robust understanding of asynchronous programming and distributed systems. Experience working with JSON and XML payloads. Experience developing and deploying applications in AWS. Experience with Docker and Kubernetes or similar container orchestration technologies. Understanding of API design, authentication, error handling, resiliency, and observability. Experience with automated unit and integration testing. Experience with Git-based development workflows and CI/CD pipelines. Strong debugging and problem-solving skills. Ability to work with complex integrations involving multiple internal and external systems.
Preferred Qualifications Experience with airline distribution, reservation, or travel technology. Knowledge of IATA NDC APIs and airline Offer and Order Management concepts. Experience with EDIFACT messaging and/or TTY airline messaging. Experience integrating with airline Passenger Service Systems (PSS). Knowledge of airline shopping, availability, pricing, booking, ticketing, servicing, payment, or settlement workflows. Experience with AWS EKS, Lambda, DynamoDB, and other AWS services. Experience with observability platforms such as OpenTelemetry, Sumo Logic, or OpenSearch. Experience modernizing legacy applications into cloud-native microservices. Familiarity with C/C++ is beneficial when working with or migrating legacy OpenConnect components. Technical Stack Backend: TypeScript, Node.js, REST APIs, Microservices Data & Messaging: JSON, XML, SOAP, EDIFACT/TTY Cloud & Runtime: AWS, EKS, Kubernetes, Docker Data & Services: DynamoDB, AWS services CI/CD & DevOps: Git, Jenkins/GitLab pipelines, JFrog Observability: OpenTelemetry, Sumo Logic, OpenSearch Airline Domain: IATA NDC, PSS integrations, Offer & Order Management What Success Looks Like The engineer in this role will help evolve OpenConnect into a scalable, modern airline connectivity platform by delivering reliable integrations, reducing dependency on legacy components, and expanding the capabilities of the modern OpenConnect framework. Success will include delivering high-quality production services, successfully onboarding and migrating airline integrations to the modern framework, improving platform reliability and maintainability, and contributing to reusable capabilities that reduce the effort required to support future airline integrations.Role & responsibilities
