Role Overview
The Barista / Head Barista is responsible for preparing consistently excellent coffee and beverages while maintaining high standards of customer service, cleanliness, speed, and bar operations.
The Head Barista additionally takes ownership of coffee quality, staff training, recipes, inventory, equipment care, wastage control, and overall performance of the coffee bar.
Key Responsibilities
* Prepare espresso-based beverages, speciality coffee, matcha, hot chocolate, teas, cold beverages and seasonal drinks according to Jitters recipes.
* Dial in espresso and monitor coffee dose, yield, extraction time, grind size and taste throughout the day.
* Steam and texture milk correctly and maintain consistency in beverage temperature, taste and presentation.
* Follow approved recipes, measurements, glassware and presentation standards.
* Maintain knowledge of coffee beans, flavour profiles, brewing methods and menu ingredients.
* Welcome customers warmly, understand their preferences and recommend suitable beverages.
* Handle modifications, complaints and beverage remakes professionally.
* Keep the espresso machine, grinders, pitchers, refrigerators, counters, sinks and bar equipment clean and organised.
* Follow daily opening, closing and cleaning procedures.
* Backflush and clean the espresso machine and maintain grinders and other equipment according to schedule.
* Maintain sufficient mise-en-place including coffee, milk, syrups, sauces, garnishes, ice, cups and other supplies.
* Follow FIFO, food safety, hygiene and correct storage procedures.
* Minimise wastage of coffee, milk, ingredients and disposables.
* Coordinate with kitchen, service, billing and management teams during operations.
* Support other staff during rush periods and maintain a calm, productive working environment.
Additional Responsibilities — Head Barista
* Take ownership of the quality and consistency of all beverages served at Jitters.
* Set and maintain espresso recipes and beverage preparation standards.
* Taste and calibrate coffee regularly and make adjustments when required.
* Train new and existing baristas in espresso, milk steaming, latte art, recipes, equipment handling, hygiene and customer service.
* Conduct regular staff skill assessments and corrective training.
* Maintain written and standardised recipes for all beverages.
* Assist management with new beverage development and seasonal menus.
* Monitor bar inventory and inform management about purchasing requirements before stock runs out.
* Conduct stock checks and monitor expiry dates, usage and stock variance.
* Track wastage, incorrect drinks and unnecessary consumption of ingredients.
* Maintain equipment cleaning and preventive-maintenance schedules.
* Identify equipment problems and report servicing requirements promptly.
* Manage bar workflow during busy periods and improve speed and efficiency.
* Ensure all baristas follow Jitters standards regardless of shift or workload.
* Maintain records for cleaning, training, recipes, inventory, wastage and equipment issues.
Skills & Requirements
* Previous café or barista experience preferred; strong professional barista experience required for Head Barista.
* Good understanding of espresso extraction, grind adjustment and milk steaming.
* Strong customer-service and communication skills.
* Ability to work efficiently under pressure.
* High standards of cleanliness, organisation and attention to detail.
* Reliable, punctual, disciplined and team-oriented.
* Head Barista must demonstrate leadership, training ability, inventory awareness and ownership of the coffee bar.
Performance Standards
Performance will be evaluated on beverage consistency, coffee quality, customer feedback, speed of service, cleanliness, recipe compliance, wastage, inventory control, equipment care, attendance, teamwork and overall bar performance.
At Jitters, every beverage should meet the same standard regardless of who prepares it.
