Avionics Embedded Software Engineer (DO-178C / BSP, RTOS & Drivers)
Location: Bengaluru (On-site / Hybrid)
Domain: Aerospace & Defense — Airborne Systems
Employment Type: Full time / Contract
About the RoleWe are seeking an experienced Avionics Embedded Software Engineer to build and integrate high-integrity, flight-critical software for advanced airborne platforms. In this role, you will be responsible for low-level embedded software development supporting Flight Control Systems (FCS), Flight Management Systems (FMS), and Cockpit Displays in accordance with DO-178C guidelines (DAL A/B).
The ideal candidate bridges low-level silicon and high-level flight software, bringing hands-on expertise in bare-metal bring-up, RTOS environments, Board Support Packages (BSPs), and device driver implementation, backed by a solid understanding of safety-critical Verification & Validation (V&V;) lifecycles.
Key Responsibilities
- Flight-Critical Software Development: Architect, implement, and integrate deterministic embedded software in C and C++ for FCS, FMS, and primary flight/engine displays compliant with DO-178C objectives.
- Bare-Metal & • RTOS Engineering:
Develop low-level software across bare-metal target environments and commercial RTOS platforms (e.g., VxWorks, FreeRTOS, PikeOS, INTEGRITY), managing task scheduling, memory management, and inter-process communication.
- BSP & • Custom Device Drivers:
Design, write, and debug Board Support Packages (BSPs), bootloaders, hardware abstraction layers (HAL), and low-level peripheral drivers directly from hardware datasheets.
- Avionics Bus Communication:
Implement and optimize communication stacks for standard avionics protocols including ARINC 429, MIL-STD-1553B, AFDX/Ethernet, CAN, SPI, I2C, and UART.
- Requirements & • Traceability:
Author and review High-Level Requirements (HLR), Low-Level Requirements (LLR), and Software Design Descriptions (SDD), ensuring strict bi-directional traceability using DOORS or similar tools.
- V&V; Alignment & • Defect Analysis:
Leverage strong V&V; knowledge to architect highly testable code, adhere strictly to MISRA C/C++ guidelines, resolve static/dynamic analysis findings, and collaborate with test engineers during Unit Testing (UT), Software-Software Integration Testing (SSIT), and Hardware-Software Integration Testing (HSIT).
- Target Bring-Up & • Lab Debugging:
Use JTAG emulators, logic analyzers, bus monitors, and oscilloscopes to troubleshoot timing jitter, race conditions, interrupt handling, and bus communication faults on bench hardware.
- Required Qualifications & • Technical Skills
- Education: B.E. / B.Tech or M.E. / M.Tech in Electronics & • Communication, Aerospace, Computer Science, Instrumentation, or related engineering discipline.
- Experience:
3 to 10+ years of dedicated hands-on embedded software engineering in safety-critical aerospace or defense domains.
- Low-Level Software Proficiency:
- Advanced C and modern C++ for constrained, deterministic target microprocessors and DSPs (ARM Cortex, PowerPC, etc.).
- Practical experience writing custom BSPs, interrupt handlers (ISRs), and peripheral drivers from scratch on bare-metal and RTOS platforms.
- Standards & • Lifecycles:
- Solid working knowledge of DO-178C development life cycle, configuration management, and baseline controls (DAL A/B preferred).
- Direct understanding of V&V; requirements, including structural coverage metrics (Statement, Decision, and MC/DC coverage) and test bench integration.
- Tools & • Hardware:
Hands-on exposure to in-circuit debuggers (e.g., Lauterbach Trace32), bus analyzers (ARINC 429 / 1553), and static analysis tools (e.g., LDRA, Polyspace, or VectorCAST).
