Job Description
Mainframe Engineering Lead / Architect UK Financial Services Client Role purpose We’re looking for a senior Mainframe Engineering Lead with robust hands-on engineering experience to help a UK financial services client modernise its non-production environments across mainframe and digital estates. This is an engineering-led role, not an operations or infrastructure-only one. The client plans to keep its mainframe, so the focus is on improving how mainframe environments are built, tested and integrated, not on migrating away from the mainframe. The engagement starts with a strategy and target-state phase, followed by a time-boxed Proof of Value (PoV).

Key responsibilities
• Assess the current mainframe non-production estate: regions, dependencies, batch, test data, and build/deploy processes.
• Identify where shared regions and manual processes cause waiting, contention and late testing.
• Assess the current mainframe toolchain, licences and skills, and confirm what is realistically available.
• Help define the target state for mainframe environments, deciding what must stay shared and what can be automated, isolated or virtualised.
• Shape the mainframe approach to CI/CD, source control (Endevor/Git, including running both during transition), automated testing, test data and service virtualisation.
• Contribute to the performance and batch testing strategy at representative volumes,



including month-end and year-end runs.
• Define the mainframe boundary for the PoV and work hands-on with engineers to deliver a thin implementation, linking the pipeline to existing build/deploy and automating test data reset.
• Turn findings into practical recommendations for the next phase’s roadmap. Required experience
• Deep IBM z/OS application engineering background: COBOL, JCL, CICS, Db2, with working knowledge of MQ and VSAM
• Mainframe build, deploy and release lifecycle, ideally including Endevor
• Batch processing, scheduling and performance analysis
• Mainframe test environments and test data management
• Practical experience applying CI/CD and DevOps to mainframe
• Experience working across mainframe and digital/cloud engineering teams Desirable
• Git-based mainframe development (Endevor Bridge for Git, IBM Dependency Based Build)
• IBM Wazi / Wazi Deploy, zUnit / Test Accelerator for Z, ZD&T;
• IBM Z Virtual Test Platform or other mainframe service virtualisation
• BMC AMI or IBM Optim for test data; Strobe/APA for performance profiling

• A former hands-on mainframe engineer who has moved into an architecture or lead role.
• Has enough technical depth to work directly with engineers, and can also present clearly to senior stakeholders.
• Applies modern engineering practices to the mainframe in a practical way rather than defaulting to "move off the mainframe."
• Can turn technical observations into a target state, a roadmap and a PoV that can actually be delivered.
