About Even Healthcare
Even is building a new kind of hospital network in India, one designed around better clinical outcomes, greater affordability, and a fundamentally better patient experience.
Traditional hospitals are incentivised by the volume of treatments and procedures they perform. We're taking a different approach. By partnering directly with leading health insurers, we're building a network of technology-enabled hospitals where the incentives are aligned around keeping patients healthier, delivering better care, and reducing unnecessary healthcare costs.
Our model combines accessible neighbourhood hospitals, technology-driven operations, and a strong focus on clinical outcomes to make high-quality healthcare more convenient, transparent, and affordable.
We're starting in Bengaluru, with ambitions to scale this model across India and fundamentally change how healthcare is delivered. Pasted text
About The Role
We're looking for an experienced payroll and compliance professional who understands what it takes to manage payroll in a large, complex, multi-entity organisation.
This is a hands-on role for someone who knows payroll and labour laws inside out, has managed payroll operations at scale, and is equally comfortable reconciling payroll data, resolving statutory discrepancies, and working directly with government authorities.
We're looking for demonstrated expertise - someone who has navigated complex payroll environments, understands the regulations behind the processes, and can independently resolve problems without relying entirely on payroll software or external consultants.
You'll work closely with our People, Finance, and Operations teams and report to Head of Finance.
What You'll Own
- End-to-End Payroll Operations
- Own monthly payroll processing for a growing workforce across multiple entities, functions, and locations.
- Manage salary computations, deductions, reimbursements, arrears, incentives, full-and-final settlements, and payroll adjustments.
- Ensure accurate and timely payroll execution, including reconciliations and approvals.
- Handle complex payroll scenarios involving transfers, reporting structures, employment categories, and location-specific requirements.
- Build robust payroll controls, audit trails, and processes that can support an increasingly complex organisation.
- Statutory Compliance & Labour Laws
- Own payroll-related statutory compliance, including PF, ESI, Professional Tax, TDS,
Labour Welfare Fund, gratuity, and other applicable requirements.
- Ensure timely statutory deposits, filings, returns, and maintenance of statutory records.
- Stay current with changes in central and state labour laws and translate regulatory requirements into operational processes.
- Manage statutory inspections, notices, assessments, audits, and regulatory queries.
- Liaise directly with labour departments, PF/ESI offices, and other statutory authorities to resolve issues.
- Identify compliance gaps proactively and drive them to closure.
- Multi-Entity & Multi-Location Operations
- Manage payroll complexities across multiple legal entities and business units.
- Understand and navigate organisational structures with matrix reporting, dotted-line relationships, and different employment arrangements.
- Ensure location-specific statutory requirements are appropriately implemented.
- Partner with HR, Finance, Legal, and business stakeholders to resolve payroll and compliance issues.
- Problem Solving & Process Excellence
- Investigate and resolve payroll discrepancies, historical compliance gaps, employee escalations, and statutory exceptions.
- Independently validate payroll calculations and statutory obligations rather than relying exclusively on system-generated outputs.
- Work effectively with payroll vendors, consultants, and external partners while retaining full ownership of accuracy and compliance.
- Improve payroll processes, documentation, internal controls, and reporting.
- Support payroll-related audits and ensure the organisation is consistently audit-ready.
What We're Looking For Must-haves
- 5 - 12 years of hands-on experience managing payroll and statutory compliance in India.
- Experience independently managing payroll operations for 1,000+ employees, ideally across organisations with 1,500 - 3,000 employees or more.
- Experience working in established, operationally complex organisations or mature scale-ups with multiple functions, reporting structures, and locations.
- Strong practical knowledge of Indian labour laws,
payroll regulations, and statutory compliance requirements.
- Experience dealing directly with government authorities, including labour offices and statutory departments.
- Ability to manage payroll calculations, reconciliations, compliance requirements, and exceptions independently.
- Demonstrated experience resolving complex payroll and compliance issues, including situations requiring judgment beyond standard software workflows.
- Strong attention to detail, operational discipline, and the ability to take complete ownership of outcomes.
Good to have
- Experience managing payroll across multiple legal entities.
- Familiarity with Karnataka labour regulations and local statutory processes.
- Proficiency in Kannada to support interactions with local authorities and stakeholders.
- Experience in healthcare, hospitals, manufacturing, retail, logistics, or other operationally intensive industries.
- Experience with payroll systems and HRMS platforms, coupled with a strong understanding of the underlying payroll processes.
Who Will Thrive Here You'll likely enjoy this role if you're someone who:
- Knows the rules and knows how to get things done. You understand statutory requirements and can navigate the practical realities of getting matters resolved.
- Is comfortable with complexity. Multiple entities, locations, reporting lines, and employee categories don't intimidate you.
- Takes ownership. You're comfortable dealing with government offices, following up on outstanding issues, and seeing things through to resolution.
- Values accuracy and consistency. You appreciate that payroll is a high-trust function where getting the fundamentals right matters enormously.
- Is genuinely hands-on. You can use software effectively, but your expertise goes much deeper than knowing which buttons to click.
- Brings sound judgment. You know when to escalate, when to investigate, and how to resolve problems pragmatically while remaining compliant.
Why Join Even? We're building an integrated healthcare system in India, and our organisational complexity is growing alongside our ambition. This role offers the prospect to take ownership of a business-critical function, build reliable processes at scale, and ensure that our payroll and compliance foundations remain strong as the organisation grows.
