About the Role

We are looking for a Forward-Deployed Data Engineer to work on site with our clients' IT and business teams. You will find, extract, standardise and consolidate authorised enterprise data spread across workstations, file servers, NAS devices, network shares, cloud storage and legacy systems. You will build repeatable ingestion and data-sanitisation pipelines, and deliver a governed, searchable source of truth for unstructured and multimodal data.

At a manufacturing company, CAD drawings, emails, maintenance reports, inspection videos and technical PDFs sit across engineering workstations, department drives and archives. You would inventory the approved sources, automate extraction, capture provenance, remove or redact personal and sensitive information as required, validate the results and hand over an indexed, access-controlled dataset with an auditable manifest. Complete, integrity-checked, traceable and properly sanitised datasets from fragmented sources, with reproducible extraction pipelines, documented quality checks and a usable central inventory.

Responsibilities

- Run on-site discovery, inventory and extraction across fragmented enterprise systems, agreeing scope and authorised access with data owners and IT teams.
- Build Python workflows for recursive discovery, bulk transfer, metadata capture, classification, deduplication and integrity checks.
- Process email archives, PDFs, office documents, CAD/BIM models, images, audio, video and structured exports, keeping file lineage and source metadata.
- Detect and scrub personal and sensitive data in text, attachments,



document metadata, scanned images, audio and video, using redaction, masking, pseudonymisation or exclusion as appropriate.
- Verify de-identification quality: test for missed identifiers, keep review and audit records, and apply retention and access controls in line with client agreements and applicable law.
- Build central storage and searchable catalogues with checksums, provenance, versioning, clear taxonomies and secure access, and fix corrupt files, permission issues and transfer failures.

Qualifications

- 2+ years of hands-on experience in data engineering, software engineering, infrastructure or enterprise data migration.

Required Skills

- Robust Python and Linux skills; practical knowledge of file systems, batch processing, APIs and reliable large-volume transfers.
- Experience with NAS/network shares (SMB/NFS) and cloud object storage (AWS S3, Google Cloud Storage or Azure Blob).
- Working knowledge of PII detection, data cleansing, the limits of anonymisation/de-identification, and secure handling of sensitive enterprise data.
- Comfortable working independently in unfamiliar IT environments, coordinating with client stakeholders, and travelling regularly.
