The Opportunity:

We want a sharp, creative writer who can make anything readable – a magazine feature, an event invitation or a three-line caption – and who is just as good in a room full of guests..

What You Will Do:

Writing, on any platform

- Write features, profiles, interviews, columns and short pieces for the magazine, as commissioned by the Managing Editor.
- Write for the events programme: invitations, programme notes, speaker introductions, scripts and recaps.
- Write for digital and social: captions, newsletters, video scripts and event previews and highlights.
- Write brand and partnership copy when needed, in the 1838 voice and to the House Style Sheet.

Events

- Attend 1838 events, often in the evening, to report, interview, gather material and post in real time.
- Look after speakers and guests where needed and represent 1838 with confidence.
- Turn what happens in the room into stories for the magazine,



digital and social.

Team meetings and ideas

- Attend team meetings for status updates and come ready with progress, problems and solutions.
- Bring ideas to every ideation session: stories, speakers, formats, series and partnerships.
- Keep track of what is happening across culture, design, food, fashion and ideas, and flag what 1838 should cover or host.

Quality

- Check facts, names and quotes before filing; meet deadlines without being chased.

What You Bring:

- 4 to 6 years of professional writing at a magazine, newspaper, digital publication, agency or cultural organisation.
- Published work across at least two formats – for example long-form and social or print and scripts.
- A real interest in culture, design, food, fashion, travel or ideas, and the reading to back it up.
- Excellent English; comfortable writing in British spelling.

Education:

A Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mass Communication, Journalism, English, Literature, Media Studies, Advertising, or a related discipline is desirable. Strong writing and storytelling ability, creative thinking, digital content expertise, cultural awareness, and a demonstrated track record of building and growing digital audiences will carry significant weight.
