About CaplaAt Capla, we are redefining the future of surgery through intelligent, connected, and data-driven medical technologies. Our mission is to make surgery smarter, safer, and more human-centered by combining the power of AI, machine learning, cloud computing, and advanced visualization systems. We are developing next-generation surgical navigation, robotics and OR integration platforms that empower surgeons with precision, real-time insights, and intuitive control - ultimately improving patient outcomes worldwide.
Capla's strength comes from its multidisciplinary team of healthcare professionals, surgeons, robotic and biomedical engineers, AI and ML specialists, quality experts, and data scientists. Together, we're building an ecosystem of technologies that bring intelligence, accuracy, and trust to every step of the surgical workflow.
As an early and rapidly growing healthcare startup, Capla offers an exciting environment for those who want to be part of something transformational. Every individual contributes directly to shaping products that will define the future of modern surgery.
Position SummaryWe are expanding our engineering team and looking for a Mechanical Design Engineer who will design medical-grade instruments, mechanical assemblies and components for Capla's surgical navigation and robotic systems.
This role combines hands-on SolidWorks design with project ownership: you will take parts from concept and prototype through vendor quotes, production and delivery, keeping design and manufacturing work on schedule. Your work will directly shape how surgeons interact with Capla's systems in the operating room.
Key ResponsibilitiesDesign & Development• Design and develop precision mechanical components, surgical instruments, tracking markers,
trays and assemblies for medical devices.
- Create detailed 3D CAD models, engineering drawings with GD&T;, and assembly documentation in SolidWorks.
- Build and test prototypes (3D printing and machined parts) and run design iteration cycles.
- Resolve design issues found during prototyping, testing or production.
Project Management - Design to Production• Plan and track design projects from concept to production, with transparent milestones, owners and timelines.
- Manage suppliers and manufacturing partners: RFQs, quote comparison, purchase coordination, follow-ups and delivery tracking.
- Drive design for manufacturability and assembly (DFM/DFA), and support transfer of designs to production.
- Coordinate first-article inspection, incoming quality checks and resolution of non-conforming parts with vendors.
- Report status, risks and delays to the engineering and product leads, and escalate early when timelines slip.
Quality & Documentation• Ensure designs follow medical device design controls (ISO 13485) and regulatory expectations.
- Manage engineering documentation, revisions and design change control.
- Participate in risk management, including DFMEA and design reviews.
- Maintain the Design History File (DHF) and Device Master Record (DMR) for your products.
Required Qualifications• Bachelor's or master’s degree in mechanical engineering.
- 3-5 years of experience in mechanical product design and development.
- Hands-on experience designing precision mechanical components or assemblies.
- Proven experience managing parts or projects from design through vendor production and delivery.
- Experience with design documentation, engineering change processes and DFMEA.
- Strong attention to detail, ownership and follow-through.
- Good written and verbal communication skills, including working with external suppliers.
Technical Skills• Strong proficiency in SolidWorks (parts, assemblies, drawings, configurations).
- Good understanding of GD&T; and tolerance stack-up analysis.
- Knowledge of manufacturing processes: CNC machining, sheet metal, injection moulding, 3D printing (FDM, SLA, SLS, metal) and precision assembly.
- Familiarity with project tracking tools (MS Project, Excel trackers, Jira or similar).
Preferred Experience• Experience in the medical device industry, especially surgical instruments or sterilizable products.
- Familiarity with medical-grade materials: stainless steels, titanium, aluminium, PEEK and other medical polymers, coatings and surface finishes.
- Knowledge of sterilization requirements (autoclave, EtO) and their impact on design.
- Experience with DHF and DMR documentation practices.
- Experience managing a local supplier network for prototypes and small-batch production.
Why Join Capla• Design real surgical technology used in operating rooms.
- Work on complex systems combining instruments, robotics, optics and software.
- High ownership, from first sketch to delivered product.
- Fast-moving, hands-on engineering environment.
- Help build a global med-tech platform company.
