Freelance Subject Matter Expert (SME) – Mechanics of Materials

Engagement Type: Freelance / Contract

Work Mode: Remote

Project Focus: Textbook Problem Authoring, Review, and Testing on an LMS Platform

About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled Freelance Subject Matter Expert (SME) in Mechanics of Materials to support academic content development and digital assessment projects. The primary responsibility is to code textbook problems on the designated Learning Management System (LMS), review the content for technical accuracy, and test questions to ensure that they function correctly. The SME will apply strong subject knowledge to validate calculations and solutions, identify content issues, and ensure that deliverables meet the project’s quality, editorial, and instructional standards.

Key Responsibilities

- Problem Authoring and LMS Coding

· Review textbook problems, source content, and project instructions before authoring.

· Code and enter textbook problems on the designated LMS platform using the prescribed templates and guidelines.

· Enter question statements, equations, mathematical notation, diagrams, answer fields, and supporting content accurately, as applicable.

· Configure answers, rounding rules, tolerances, and response settings according to project specifications.

· Add step-by-step solutions, explanations, and other instructional content where required.

· Ensure that symbols, units, subscripts, superscripts, and mathematical expressions are represented correctly on the platform.

- Technical Review and Content Enhancement

· Evaluate authored content for conceptual accuracy, completeness, and consistency with the source textbook.

· Verify calculations, formulas, engineering assumptions, units, and final answers.

· Identify and correct errors in calculations, diagrams, terminology, equations, and other technical content.

· Recommend or implement revisions that improve clarity, structure,

and pedagogical effectiveness without changing the intended meaning of the source material.

· Ensure that solutions reflect accepted engineering principles and practices.

- Problem Solving and Solution Writing

· Solve textbook-style and applied problems related to Mechanics of Materials.

· Write clear, accurate, logically organized, step-by-step solutions that are accessible to students.

· Check that solution steps lead correctly to the stated answer and that explanations support student understanding.

· Review numerical answers and answer-acceptance settings, including rounding and tolerance requirements.

- Functional Testing and Quality Assurance

· Test authored questions on the LMS platform to verify functionality and the expected student experience.

· Check answer fields, grading behavior, accepted responses, numerical tolerances, and units, as applicable.

· Verify the rendering of equations, symbols, diagrams, and other question components.

· Identify platform or content issues, correct them where appropriate, and document issues that require escalation.

· Perform final quality checks before submitting completed questions or chapters.

- Guideline Compliance and Project Coordination

· Follow project-specific instructions for rounding, tolerances, notation, formatting, and instructional presentation.

· Ensure deliverables meet established quality, editorial, and instructional standards.

· Incorporate reviewer feedback and resolve identified issues within agreed timelines.

· Maintain clear records of progress, corrections, and outstanding questions, as required.

· Communicate technical queries or platform-related concerns promptly to the project team.

Subject Areas Covered The SME should demonstrate robust knowledge across the following core Mechanics of Materials topics:

· Stress and Strain under Axial Loading

· Torsion

· Pure Bending

· Bending and Shear Analysis of Beams

· Stress and Strain Transformations

· Principal Stresses and Deflections

· Buckling of Columns

· Energy Methods

Required Qualifications and SkillsEducational Background

Master’s degree or Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, or a closely related field.

Experience

· Experience teaching, tutoring, solving problems, or creating academic content in Mechanics of Materials or Strength of Materials.

· Experience with curriculum design, textbook review, technical content development, or assessment authoring is an advantage.

· Prior experience with an LMS or digital question-authoring platform is preferred.

Engagement Expectations

· This is a freelance, project-based engagement, with assignments allocated according to project needs.

· The SME is expected to work within agreed timelines and follow the prescribed authoring, review, and testing workflow.

· All assigned work must meet the required standards for technical accuracy, platform functionality, and content quality.

· The SME should communicate progress and raise questions or blockers promptly.

Ideal Candidate Profile The ideal candidate is a detail-oriented engineering professional with strong expertise in Mechanics of Materials and experience explaining technical concepts clearly. They can solve and validate engineering problems, translate textbook content into digital assessments, and carefully review and test questions to ensure technical accuracy and a reliable student learning experience.
