ABOUT VIRGINIA TRANSFORMER
Virginia Transformer Corp. is a leading U.S.-owned power transformer manufacturer, serving Data Center, Utility, Industrial and Renewable markets across North America. Virginia Transformer India Private Limited supports global engineering activities for engineered-to-order transformer solutions.
Following a period of robust growth, our India engineering organization is expanding to support the next phase of business development, technical excellence, and reliable project delivery.
ROLE OVERVIEW
Serve as an independent senior technical specialist in the electromagnetic design of large oil-immersed power transformers, with deep expertise in core sizing, winding arrangements, impedance, load/no-load and stray losses, leakage flux and short-circuit forces. Provide design review and optimization support for North American transformer projects up to 250 MVA and 230 kV class.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Calculate and optimize core cross-section, flux density, magnetic circuit parameters, excitation current and no-load losses.
- Develop HV, LV, tertiary and regulating winding configurations, conductor selection, turns distribution and electrical clearances.
- Evaluate winding current density, eddy/circulating-current losses, conductor transposition and manufacturing feasibility.
- Calculate leakage impedance, resistance/reactance and tolerance sensitivity; optimize winding geometry to meet guaranteed values.
- Calculate load, no-load, stray and total losses; optimize material cost, electrical efficiency and loss guarantees.
- Analyze leakage flux and stray heating in tanks, clamps, structural members, leads and other metallic components.
- Calculate axial/radial electromagnetic short-circuit forces and thermal withstand; collaborate on mechanical support designs.
- Use transformer design software and electromagnetic FEA (ANSYS Maxwell/COMSOL or equivalent) to verify critical results where required.
- Review customer requirements, quotations, detailed calculations, specifications, drawings and BOMs for technical compliance.
- Support US testing teams on impedance, losses, temperature-rise and short-circuit issues; investigate deviations and recommend improvements.
- Develop calculation standards, automation and reusable design practices while mentoring electrical design engineers.
QUALIFICATION & EXPERIENCE
- B.E./B.Tech in Electrical Engineering; M.E./M.Tech in Power Engineering or similar specialization preferred.
- Extensive hands-on electrical/electromagnetic power transformer design experience; 15+ years preferred.
- Direct design or approval experience on transformers rated 100 MVA or above; 115/138/230 kV classes advantageous.
- Strong independent skills in core sizing, windings, impedance, losses, stray losses and short-circuit force calculations.
- Good working knowledge of IEEE/ANSI transformer design standards and North American utility requirements.
- Strong engineering judgment, analytical skills, design optimization and cross-functional problem-solving capability.
