We are looking for a Perl Engineer to design, build, operate, and continuously improve reliable backend services and APIs. You will work closely with product managers, engineers, test engineers, and other stakeholders to turn customer and business needs into maintainable, scalable software.
This role is suited to an engineer who is comfortable working in an established Perl ecosystem, while also helping modernise systems, improve engineering practices, and contribute to technical decisions.
Key responsibilities
- Design, implement, test, deploy, and operate backend services and APIs in Perl.
- Build maintainable solutions using clear interfaces, sound object-oriented design, and appropriate architectural patterns.
- Improve the performance, reliability, observability, and security of production systems.
- Work with relational databases, data models, queries, migrations, and transaction handling.
- Diagnose production issues, participate in incident response, and deliver sustainable fixes.
- Write automated unit, integration, and end-to-end tests.
- Review code, provide constructive feedback, and contribute to shared engineering standards.
- Collaborate with product and engineering partners to break down requirements and deliver iteratively.
- Contribute to technical design discussions and communicate trade-offs clearly.
- Help modernise legacy Perl components through incremental refactoring, improved test coverage, and pragmatic migration strategies.
- Document systems, operational procedures, and key technical decisions.
Required experience and skills
- 3+ years of professional software engineering experience, including substantial hands-on Perl development.
- Strong knowledge of Perl 5, including references, complex data structures, modules, exception handling, and regular expressions.
- Experience designing and consuming RESTful APIs or other service interfaces.
- Good understanding of object-oriented programming and modular software design.
- Experience with relational databases such as MySQL, PostgreSQL, or Oracle, and practical SQL skills.
- Experience writing automated tests and working with test doubles, fixtures, or contract tests.
- Familiarity with Git, code review, continuous integration, and production deployment practices.
- Experience troubleshooting software using logs, metrics, traces, profilers, or debuggers.
- Understanding of secure coding practices, including input validation, authentication, authorisation, and protection of sensitive data.
- Effective written and verbal communication skills.
- A collaborative, ownership-oriented approach to software delivery.
Perl frameworks and ecosystem Hands-on experience with one or more of the following is valuable:
- Mojolicious modern Perl web applications, routing, REST APIs, WebSockets, and asynchronous capabilities.
- Catalyst — MVC-based web applications, middleware, plugins, and established service architectures.
- Dancer2 — lightweight web services and APIs.
- PSGI/Plack — Perl web application interfaces, middleware, and deployment patterns. DBIx::Class — database abstraction and ORM-based data access.
- Moose or Moo — object-oriented design, roles, attributes, and reusable components.
- Template Toolkit or Mason — server-side rendering and templating.
- Try::Tiny, Log::Any,
or equivalent libraries for error handling and structured application logging.
Experience with a particular framework is not required if you have strong Perl fundamentals and can demonstrate that you learn frameworks quickly.
Helpful additional experience
- Experience with distributed systems, event-driven services, queues, or asynchronous processing.
- Familiarity with Docker, Kubernetes, or cloud-based runtime environments.
- Experience with CI/CD pipelines and infrastructure-as-code practices.
- Knowledge of Kafka, RabbitMQ, Redis, or similar messaging and caching technologies.
- Experience with observability tooling such as Prometheus, Grafana, OpenTelemetry, or equivalent platforms.
- Familiarity with Java, Python, Go, JavaScript, or another backend language.
- Experience working with large, long-lived codebases and incremental modernisation.
- Exposure to agile delivery practices and working in cross-functional teams.
- Experience with Gitlab pipelines.
What success looks like Within the first 6–12 months, you will:
- Deliver production changes safely and consistently across one or more Perl services.
- Become a trusted contributor in design reviews, code reviews, and operational discussions.
- Improve test coverage, documentation, observability, or maintainability in the systems you support.
- Resolve issues effectively and help prevent recurring incidents.
- Build strong working relationships with product and engineering stakeholders.
- Contribute to a roadmap for reducing technical risk and improving the Perl platform.
Education A degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field is helpful but not required. Equivalent professional experience is welcomeRole & responsibilities
