- Specimen Receipt and Labeling: Receive, log, and accurately identify tissue biopsies or surgical specimens, ensuring strict traceability and proper documentation in the Laboratory Information System (LIS)
- Tissue Processing: Fix, dehydrate, and infiltrate tissue samples using specialized automated processors or chemical solutions (such as formalin and alcohol) to preserve cellular structure.
- Embedding: Encase processed tissue blocks in molten paraffin wax to create solid blocks for sectioning.
- Sectioning (Microtomy): Use a microtome or cryostat to cut extremely thin slices (typically 3 to 4 microns) of the tissue sample.
- Mounting and Staining:
Float tissue sections onto glass slides and apply standard or special stains (such as Hematoxylin and Eosin [H&E;]) to highlight cellular structures and abnormalities.
- Equipment Maintenance: Operate, calibrate, clean, and perform routine preventive maintenance on lab instruments like microtomes, tissue processors, staining stations, and cryostats.
- Quality Control and Safety: Monitor quality control standards, handle hazardous chemicals safely, and properly dispose of biological and chemical waste following institutional protocols.
