Role purpose

We are looking for a senior AWS Network Specialist with proven experience in large-scale AWS environments supporting more than 100 applications.

The specialist will work in a multi-account, hub-and-spoke AWS architecture with central network, security and logging services. The primary objective is to reduce the network cost of existing application interfaces and data flows while maintaining security, resilience and performance requirements.

The specialist will also support application teams, participate in network designs driven by new security requirements, and review major technology building blocks with a significant network footprint, including Confluent and Snowflake.

Key responsibilities

Network cost and data-flow optimisation

- Analyse network traffic and data flows between AWS accounts, VPCs, on-premises environments, SaaS platforms and external parties.
- Identify avoidable costs related to AWS Transit Gateway, inter-AZ traffic, inter-region traffic, NAT Gateways, VPC endpoints, internet egress, inspection paths and duplicated data transfers.
- Analyse existing application interfaces and recommend more cost-efficient routing and connectivity patterns.
- Quantify the expected savings, implementation effort, technical risks and operational impact of each recommendation.




- Work with FinOps teams to establish network-cost baselines and track realised savings.
- Identify situations where data is transferred several times or follows unnecessarily expensive paths between producers and consumers.

Application-team support

- Review existing application interfaces from a network, security, performance and cost perspective.
- Provide actionable recommendations to application architects and engineering teams.
- Help teams understand the cost impact of interface protocols, traffic volumes, availability-zone choices, routing decisions and security inspection.
- Support application teams during implementation, testing and validation of approved improvements.
- Translate network findings into clear technical actions with accountable owners.

Architecture and security design

- Participate in the design of new network patterns required by evolving security requirements.
- Ensure that current designs balance security, cost, availability, performance and operational supportability.
- Review traffic inspection patterns using Palo Alto firewalls and other central security services.
- Assess the role and cost impact of Cisco router appliances and other third-party networking components.




- Improve hub-and-spoke architecture patterns across application accounts and central network accounts.
- Contribute to architecture standards, guardrails and reusable network patterns.

Review of strategic building blocks

- Review and improve the network architecture of major platforms with high data-transfer volumes.
- Assess Confluent designs, including producer and consumer traffic, cross-account connectivity, availability-zone traffic and connectivity to source and target platforms.
- Assess Snowflake connectivity, PrivateLink designs, cloud-region selection, data-ingestion paths and data-egress patterns.
- Evaluate the combined network footprint of Confluent, Snowflake, operational applications and data platforms.
- Identify design choices that could create structural network-cost increases before implementation.
- Participate in architecture reviews and provide formal recommendations and design approval input.
