Job Summary
The Packaging Manager leads end-to-end packaging operations and engineering for wire and cable products (ranging from building wire and industrial cables to heavy-duty armored or fiber-optic reels). The role ensures that wooden/steel drums, stretch films, banding, and outer protective layers meet mechanical strength standards, customer specifications, and global logistics rules while reducing material waste.
Responsibilities
- Packaging Engineering & Design
- Reel & Drum Selection: Determine appropriate wooden, plywood, steel, or plastic reel/drum sizes, flange diameters, and core dimensions based on cable weight, bending radius, and length.
- Material Optimization: Develop cost-effective, durable, and eco-friendly packaging materials (strapping, shrink wrap, VCI paper, anti-corrosion protection).
- Specification Management: Create and maintain Bills of Materials (BOMs), packaging specs, and standard operating procedures (SOPs).
- Operations & Floor Management
- Line Supervision: Oversee automatic and semi-automatic coiling, spooling, armor-wrapping, and palletizing lines.
- Workflow & Output: Monitor daily packing schedules, machine uptime, and labor allocation to meet dispatch targets.
- Inventory Control: Manage stock levels of wooden drums, reels, stretch wrap, labels, and strapping hardware to prevent line stoppages.
- Quality Assurance & Compliance
- Transit Testing:
Validate packaging integrity against drop, vibration, and moisture/corrosion stress tests during transport.
- Regulatory Compliance: Ensure compliance with international shipping standards (e.g., ISPM-15 heat-treated wood packaging for export drums) and local safety codes.
- Defect Root-Cause Analysis: Investigate customer complaints related to damaged cable drums, loose coils, or mislabeled shipments.
- Vendor & Cost Management
- Supplier Negotiations: Source and audit packaging vendors (drum manufacturers, plastic/steel suppliers) for quality, pricing, and on-time delivery.
- Cost Reduction: Drive Lean / Six Sigma initiatives to trim material per-unit costs and scrap rates.
Required Qualifications
- Education: Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Packaging Engineering, or a related technical discipline.
- Experience: 5 to 8+ years of industrial packaging or manufacturing experience, preferably within the wire & cable, heavy-manufacturing, or metal/extrusion industries.
- Technical Skills:
- Proficiency in CAD or structural design software (e.g., ArtiosCAD, SolidWorks).
- Familiarity with ERP/SAP systems for BOM and inventory management.
- Working knowledge of Lean Manufacturing or Six Sigma methodologies.
- Certifications (Preferred): IOPP (Institute of Packaging Professionals), PMP, or APICS/CSCP credentials
