Senior Architect – Classical Stone Residence · Full-time · Ahmedabad, Gujarat · Office and site based

We are building something rare in modern India: a four-level neoclassical residence in Ahmedabad, built in carved Gwalior Mint sandstone and designed by a leading UK classical architecture practice. We are looking for one architect to take personal ownership of turning that design into a building.

This is not a design role, and it is not a consultancy. The design is done. We need the architect who makes sure every cornice, capital and course of ashlar is drawn correctly, built correctly and paid for correctly — and who is on site to see it happen.

The project

- The building: a private residence on four levels. The basement is complete and construction has reached plinth level; three floors are still to be built.
- The stone: about 12,000 cubic feet of Gwalior Mint sandstone, used for domes, cornices, column capitals, balustrades and 5-inch solid ashlar. There are seventeen families of carved elements, a double-height entrance hall, and lime work throughout.
- The team: a UK design architect, UK lighting and stone consultants, structural and MEP engineers, a resident PMC, and traditional stone workshops from Rajasthan and Gujarat.
- The client: an Ahmedabad family enterprise with four decades in manufacturing, and further building projects to come across the group.

What you will own

- Architect of record. Hold statutory responsibility for the building with the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation: permissions, revisions and completion.
- Construction drawings. Develop good-for-construction drawings for all four levels from the design architect's drawings. Keep a drawing register and issue revisions to a published schedule.
- Stone detailing. Draw and schedule every stone element: coursing, joints, bed heights, support and fixing method, worked out with the structural engineer. Check the workshops' shop drawings, and approve samples and a mock-up before any bulk carving begins.
- BOQs and measurement.

Prepare the stone and civil BOQs. Measure and certify material and work delivered before anything is paid; nothing is paid for until it has been measured.
- Coordination. Bring structure, MEP, lighting and landscape into one set of drawings. Act as the single point for queries, and resolve clashes on paper before they reach site.
- The design architect. Correspond directly with the UK design architect. Interpret his drawings faithfully, and refer any change of design back to him; never improvise on site.
- Site. Inspect stone setting, lime work and finishes regularly, and stop any work that does not match the drawings.

What you must bring

- A B.Arch and current registration with the Council of Architecture. This is essential, because you will sign as architect of record.
- At least 8 years after qualifying, including 4 or more producing construction drawings for buildings that were actually built.
- Hands-on experience with natural stone: you have detailed and supervised carved or load-bearing stone, not only cladding.
- The ability to produce a complete drawing set yourself in AutoCAD, not only check the work of juniors.
- Working knowledge of Gujarat's CGDCR and AMC building-permission procedures.
- Explicit written English, since you will correspond directly with consultants in the UK.
- You live in Ahmedabad or are ready to relocate.

What will set you apart

- Stone temple work: Nagara-style mandirs, Jain derasars or similar buildings where the whole structure is carved stone.
- Heritage experience: conservation or restoration, especially work with lime mortar and lime plaster.
- The classical orders:

you understand entablatures, column proportions and mouldings, and can draw them by hand.
- Fixing knowledge: stainless cramps, dowels and relieving angles, or traditional interlocking stone joints.
- 3D modelling: Rhino, SketchUp or Revit for complex elements such as domes.
- Existing registration with the AMC as an architect on record.

Terms

- Employment: full-time and permanent. You will be employed directly by the client's family enterprise, not by a firm.
- Reporting: to the client's representative, working daily alongside the PMC.
- Location: our office at Paldi, Ahmedabad, and the site in Ahmedabad.
- Salary: Up to ₹2,00,000 per month, depending on experience.

We are a demanding client, and we would rather say so now than after you join. We expect you to own outcomes, respond promptly during working hours and be present on site.

In return, you will build a stone building of a kind that is rarely attempted in India today, working closely with one of the world's leading classical practices. There are further building projects across the group for the right person.

How to apply

Please send:

- Your CV, with your Council of Architecture registration number.
- A portfolio of construction drawings, not renders, including at least two sheets of stone or detail drawings that you drew yourself.
- A few lines about the stone building you are proudest of, and what you personally drew for it.

Applications without construction drawings will not be considered.

Selection

- Portfolio review.
- An in-person interview in Ahmedabad. We are unable to cover interview travel.
- A paid drawing exercise: detail one carved stone element from the design architect's drawings, showing coursing, support and fixing.
- A site visit and a final conversation with the family.
- References from two past clients or employers, including a visit to one of your completed buildings.

Pay: Up to ₹200,000.00 per month
