About Octalsoft Octalsoft develops software for the clinical research industry. We are expanding our engineering capabilities to build secure, scalable, AI-enabled applications that support clinical research workflows. We’re looking for a hands-on Senior Software Engineer who can lead a small team, establish sound engineering practices, and take recent software capabilities from design through deployment and ongoing support. Role overview You will design and build backend services and application integrations, guide junior developers, and work with product, engineering, and quality colleagues. The role calls for strong software engineering skills and practical experience applying AI services within production applications. You will help the team make sound choices about architecture, security, reliability, and evaluation as the products develop. Responsibilities
- Design, build, and maintain secure backend services and APIs.
- Develop asynchronous workflows for document processing and AI-supported application features.
- Integrate services with Oracle Database and Oracle APEX/ORDS.
- Assess AI models and document-processing services against representative, approved test data.
- Implement structured outputs, schema validation, deterministic checks, and user review workflows.
- Establish service boundaries, database access patterns, authentication, authorization, error handling, monitoring, and deployment practices.
- Create automated tests and evaluation methods for output quality, omissions, unsupported suggestions, latency, and cost.
- Work with product and quality colleagues on intended workflows, risk assessment, traceability, and validation evidence.
- Mentor junior developers through design reviews, code reviews, testing, and production support.
- Document technical decisions, architecture, and operational procedures. Required qualifications
- 7+ years of software engineering experience,



including ownership of production backend services.
- Strong Python experience building APIs and background-processing systems.
- Experience with REST APIs, relational databases, SQL, transactions, and connection pooling.
- Experience integrating with Oracle Database or another enterprise relational database; Oracle experience is preferred.
- Experience deploying and operating services in a cloud environment; AWS experience is preferred.
- Practical experience integrating AI models or AI services into software applications.
- Strong knowledge of software testing, application security, observability, and code review.
- Ability to guide junior developers and explain technical decisions clearly. Preferred qualifications
- Oracle APEX and ORDS integration experience.
- Experience with AWS AI and document-processing services.
- Experience with model evaluation, structured generation, prompt versioning, and human review workflows.
- Experience in clinical research software or another regulated software environment.
- Java experience. What success looks like Within the first 90 days, you will:
- Agree on a maintainable architecture and integration approach with the engineering team.
- Establish secure development and test environments.
- Deliver a narrow, reviewable software capability in a non-production environment.
- Set up an evaluation approach and report performance, limitations, and failure cases.
- Define a staged plan for security, quality review, validation, and any future production pilot.
- Help junior developers take on increasing ownership of implementation and support. Candidate profile You are a hands-on engineer who enjoys building reliable software and helping a small team grow. You understand that adding AI to an application requires careful testing, review, and operational controls alongside model integration.
