Role & responsibilities

2. Role Purpose

GFSI seeks an Instructional Designer who can transform knowledge, technical expertise, and field experience into engaging, accessible, learner-centred, and outcome-oriented learning experiences.

The role will have a dual focus:

- Content development expertise: Independently design and develop learning content, particularly in soft skills and/or women's financial and business literacy.
- Instructional design and digital learning: Translate technical content provided by subject-matter specialists into effective learning modules for online, offline, and hybrid delivery, while strengthening the quality, usability, and effectiveness of learning resources hosted on GFSI's GLEAP LMS.

The successful candidate will combine sound instructional design principles with creativity, strong writing skills, digital learning capabilities, and an understanding of the realities of women entrepreneurs and development-sector capacity building.

3. Key Responsibilities

A. Instructional Design and Learning Experience Development

- Design learner-centred learning journeys, courses, modules, and sessions based on clearly defined learning objectives and learner needs.
- Apply adult learning principles, experiential learning, competency-based approaches, and relevant instructional design frameworks.
- Develop storyboards, facilitator guides, participant workbooks, presentations, job aids, assessments, exercises, case studies, and other learning resources.
- Adapt content for online self-paced learning, classroom-based training, community-level facilitation, and hybrid delivery.
- Incorporate practical examples, local contexts, interactive exercises, reflection, role-play, simulations, and application-based assignments.
- Ensure that learning resources are accessible, inclusive, culturally appropriate, and suitable for learners with varying levels of literacy and digital proficiency.

B. Development of Financial, Business Literacy and/or Soft Skills Content

- Independently develop high-quality learning modules on women's financial literacy plus business literacy and/or soft skills, based on demonstrated subject expertise.
- Translate complex concepts into simple, actionable, learner-friendly content relevant to women entrepreneurs and underserved communities.
- Develop content on topics such as financial decision-making, budgeting, savings, credit, responsible borrowing, financial safety, business planning, costing, pricing, cash-flow management, customer engagement, communication, negotiation, leadership, problem-solving, and decision-making.
- Use contextualised scenarios, practical tools, examples, and activities to help learners apply concepts to their personal, professional, and enterprise contexts.
- Ensure that content recognises gender-related barriers, unequal access to resources, and the realities of women's participation in household and business decision-making.

C. Content Development in Collaboration with Subject-Matter Specialists

Work closely with internal teams, field practitioners, external experts, and content specialists to develop learning modules across assigned themes.

Responsibilities will include interpreting technical inputs, structuring content into coherent learning experiences, developing storyboards and learning assets, ensuring pedagogical quality, and incorporating feedback from subject experts and intended learners.

D. GLEAP LMS Management and Digital Learning Quality

- Support the effective use and continuous improvement of GLEAP as GFSI's learning management platform.

- Develop, upload, organise, review, and maintain digital learning content, subject to the platform's capabilities and access permissions.
- Ensure consistency in course structure, navigation, learning objectives, assessment design, visual presentation, and learner experience.
- Work with relevant colleagues and technical support providers to troubleshoot content-related and learner-experience issues.
- Monitor available LMS data, including enrolment, participation, completion, assessment performance, and learner feedback.
- Use learning analytics and feedback to identify opportunities to improve content quality, learner engagement, and course completion.
- Maintain an organised repository of learning resources, version histories, and quality-assurance documentation.
- Support teams and facilitators in using GLEAP and integrating digital resources into blended learning programmes.

E. Multimedia and Interactive Learning Resources

- Develop scripts and storyboards for instructional videos, animations, audio learning resources, demonstrations, and other multimedia assets.
- Design interactive quizzes, knowledge checks, branching scenarios, practice exercises, and other appropriate digital learning activities.
- Work with designers, videographers, translators, and other vendors or colleagues to produce high-quality learning assets.
- Use appropriate digital authoring tools and emerging technologies, including AI-enabled tools where suitable, while maintaining accuracy, originality, accessibility, and pedagogical integrity.

F. Field Integration, Testing, and Continuous Improvement

- Consult programme teams, facilitators, entrepreneurs, and other learners to understand learning needs and practical challenges.
- Pilot selected learning modules with intended audiences and incorporate feedback before wider deployment.
- Work with field teams to adapt content for different geographies, literacy levels, languages, and delivery environments.
- Assess the practical application of learning and recommend improvements to content and instructional approaches.
- Document valuable practices, learner insights, and evidence of effective learning design.

G. Quality Assurance and Coordination

- Establish and apply quality standards for instructional design, content accuracy, language, accessibility, gender sensitivity, and visual presentation.
- Coordinate timelines, deliverables, reviews, and approvals with subject-matter experts and programme teams.
- Ensure that learning materials remain current, internally consistent, and aligned with programme objectives.
- Manage multiple content development assignments while maintaining quality and meeting agreed deadlines.
