Position Purpose
Own end-to-end reliability, performance, energy efficiency, compliance, and continuous improvement of all
plant utilities that enable safe, high-yield battery cell manufacturing. This includes both dry-process and
wet-process requirements, with special emphasis on ultra-low dew-point environments, clean/dry
compressed air, critical power, process water, and environmental treatment systems. The role ensures
utilities never become a constraint on production while driving cost, sustainability, and regulatory
excellence.
Reporting & Scope
- Reports to Plant Head.
- Leads a multi-disciplinary team of engineers, supervisors, and technicians covering HVAC/DHU,
mechanical, electrical, water, and ETP/WTP operations (plus contractors and AMC partners).
- Full ownership of: Dehumidification Units (DHU), Air Handling Units (AHU), compressed air & dry
compressed air (CDA), chillers, transformers, Main Receiving Station (MRS)/HT/LT distribution, Effluent
Treatment Plant (ETP), Water Treatment Plant (WTP)/process water systems, and all associated utilities.
Key Responsibilities
1. Operational Excellence & Reliability
- Ensure 247 availability of all critical utilities at the required quality and capacity for both dry and wet
electrode lines, cell assembly, formation, and aging.
- Maintain ultra-low dew-point conditions in dry rooms (typically 40 C to 60 C or lower, depending on
chemistry) via DHUs, AHUs, airlocks, and vapour-tight envelopes. Continuously monitor moisture load,
infiltration, and personnel/process contributions.
- Guarantee compressed air and dry compressed air quality (ISO 8573 Class suitable for dry-room use,
often 40 C to 60 C dew point) for pneumatics, purging, and process equipment.
- Oversee chillers, cooling towers, and thermal systems that support DHU regeneration, process cooling,
and HVAC.
- Manage electrical infrastructure: Main Receiving Station, transformers, HT/LT switchgear,
UPS/emergency power,
and power quality to support energy-intensive dry-room and formation loads.
- Operate and optimize Water Treatment and Effluent/Wastewater Treatment (ETP/WTP) systems, and
general plant effluent.
2. Maintenance, Asset Management & Uptime
- Develop and execute preventive, predictive, and condition-based maintenance strategies (vibration,
thermography, oil analysis, dew-point trending, etc.).
- Maximise yield of utility assets; minimise unplanned downtime that impacts production yield or quality.
- Manage spare-parts inventory, critical spares strategy, and long-lead items for DHUs, desiccant wheels,
compressors, chillers, transformers, and treatment plants.
3. Energy, Cost & Sustainability Management
- Drive energy efficiency programmes dry-room HVAC/DHU systems often represent a very large
share of plant energy. Target reductions through heat recovery, optimised regeneration, variable-speed
drives, free cooling, and advanced controls.
- Support sustainability goals: water recycle/reuse, zero-liquid-discharge aspirations where applicable.
- 4. Compliance, Safety & Environmental Stewardship
1• Ensure full compliance with electrical safety regulations, pressure vessel codes, environmental consents
(ETP/WTP discharge norms), fire safety (especially lithium-related risks), and cleanroom/dry-room
standards.
- Maintain robust Management of Change (MOC), permit-to-work, lock-out/tag-out, and confined-space
procedures for all utility systems.
- Lead utility-related emergency preparedness (power outage, chiller failure, dew-point excursions, ETP
upset, etc.).
5. Projects, Capacity Expansion & Technology
- Strongly support utility design,
specification, installation, commissioning, and validation for new lines,
capacity expansions, or technology transitions
- Evaluate and implement new technologies: advanced desiccant systems, energy-recovery wheels,
high-efficiency chillers, smart monitoring/IoT, predictive analytics, and improved water treatment trains.
6. People Leadership & Cross-Functional Collaboration
- Build, coach, and develop a high-performing utilities team; establish clear shift coverage, multi-skilling,
and succession plans.
- Partner daily with Production, Process Engineering, Quality, Maintenance, EHS, and Supply Chain to
align utility performance with manufacturing targets.
- Manage external partners: OEMs, AMC contractors, energy auditors, and regulatory bodies.
- Drive a culture of safety, ownership, data-driven decision-making, and continuous improvement (Lean,
Kaizen, TPM elements applied to utilities).
7. Performance Monitoring & Reporting
- Define, track, and report key metrics: utility availability/uptime, dew-point compliance, compressed-air
quality & cost, specific energy and water consumption, ETP/WTP compliance rates, maintenance costs,
and incident rates.
- Provide regular management reviews, budget ownership (opex & capex), and forecasting for
utility-related expenditure.
Key Competencies & Background (Recommended)
- Strong technical foundation in mechanical/electrical/HVAC/process utilities, preferably with experience in
semiconductor, pharmaceutical cleanrooms, or battery/chemical plants.
- Deep understanding of low-dew-point dehumidification, compressed-air systems, large electrical
distribution, and industrial water/effluent treatment.
- Proven leadership of multi-disciplinary teams in a continuous-process manufacturing workplace.
- Familiarity with battery-specific requirements (moisture sensitivity, solvent handling in wet processes,
formation energy loads, fire/safety codes).
