About Orvera Orvera AI builds voice AI agents that answer and make phone calls for enterprises in healthcare, insurance and contact-center operations. We are a sister company of AMInfoweb, which has run contact-center and healthcare operations for about 18 years, so our agents are built on real knowledge of how these calls work.
About the Role
As an Applied AI Engineer on Orvera' s Forward Deployed Engineering team, you will design, build and ship the voice AI agents our enterprise customers run in production. You own the agent: conversation design, tool calls, integrations, evaluations, and reliability on live calls. You will work alongside Forward Deployed Engineers, who own customer discovery and deployment. The agents you build handle high-volume, high-visibility calls in regulated industries, often across federated environments with many applications, teams and operational constraints. What You Will Do
• Build and deploy production-grade voice AI agents for inbound and outbound enterprise call workflows.
• Turn call flows and business rules into robust agent architectures: LLM orchestration, tool calling, business logic and fallbacks.
• Engineer for real-time voice: latency budgets, turn-taking, interruptions, silence handling, and speech-to-text and text-to-speech tuning.
• Build backend services and integrations with Python, FastAPI, REST APIs and webhooks, connecting agents to CRMs, contact-center platforms and systems of record.
• Apply strong practices in promptand context engineering, evaluations, guardrails and observability, including automated test calls and regression suites.
• Debug issues across AI behavior, audio, telephony, integrations, application code and production environments.
• Join customer calls with the FDE when technical depth is needed, and explain trade-offs clearly.
• Own your agents from design through go-live and continuousimprovement, using call transcripts and metrics to drive fixes.
• Turn repeatable patterns into reusable components and engineering playbooks. What We're Looking For
• 2+ years of hands-on software engineering experience, including building LLM-based or conversational AI applications.
• Hands-on experience building voice or real-time conversational agents, ideally at least a few running in production.
• Strong Python proficiency, with a high bar for clean, maintainable code.
• Experience with FastAPI or similar backend frameworks, APIs, webhooks and integrations.
• Experience with tool calling, multi-step agent workflows, and managing state across a conversation.
• Robust understandingof prompting, context management, evaluations and reliability practices for agents.
• Strong debugging and systems-thinking skills.
• High ownership and low ego; effective as an individual contributor.
• Clear written and verbal communication, including with enterprise customers.
• Bachelor' s degree in Computer Science, Engineering or a related field, or equivalent practical experience. Great to Have
• Voice AI frameworks and platforms such as Pipecat, LiveKit, Vapi or Retell; STT and TTS providers such as Deepgram or ElevenLabs.
• Telephony knowledge: SIP, PSTN, call transfers, and carriers such as Twilio, Telnyx or Bandwidth.
• Contact-center platforms such as Genesys Cloud, Five9, NICE CXone or Amazon Connect.
• Healthcare or insurance experience, including handling PHI under HIPAA.
• Integrationswith CRMs, ticketing tools, EHRs or othersystems ofrecord.
• Cloud infrastructure, RAG, tracing and observability, or agent orchestration frameworks.
• Prior customer-facing, solutions engineering or forward-deployed experience. How We Work We value engineers who combine technical depth, customer empathy and a bias for shipping. You should be comfortable moving from a customer conversation to architecture, into code, and into production debugging when needed. We work with direct communication and high standards.
