About the Role

Job Description – Senior Maintenance Engineer

Location: AOPL Unit 4
Department: Engineering & Maintenance
Reporting To: Unit Head / Plant Head

Role Overview

We are looking for a Senior Maintenance Engineer who is a hands-on professional capable of taking complete ownership of plant maintenance, engineering activities and equipment reliability.

This is not merely a supervisory maintenance role. The candidate must ensure that plant machinery, utilities, equipment and infrastructure remain in good working condition through disciplined preventive maintenance, timely breakdown resolution and effective coordination with the Production and Purchase teams.

The right candidate should be equally comfortable leading a maintenance team, personally attending to critical technical issues, coordinating engineering projects and managing vendors and procurement requirements.

The expectation is to build a maintenance function that operates proactively rather than reactively — minimizing breakdowns, reducing maintenance costs and ensuring maximum equipment availability.

Key Responsibilities1. Daily Maintenance & Breakdown Management

- Take ownership of all daily maintenance activities at the unit and ensure their timely and satisfactory completion.
- Allocate maintenance jobs to team members based on priorities, technical requirements and available resources.
- Provide technical guidance to the maintenance team and personally get involved in critical jobs whenever required.
- Attend to equipment breakdowns promptly, identify root causes and implement corrective measures to prevent recurrence.
- Maintain a daily maintenance logbook covering completed jobs, pending activities, breakdowns and equipment observations.
- Monitor equipment readings and operating parameters, identify deviations and take timely corrective action.
- Ensure that completed maintenance jobs are properly handed over to Production after verification and approval.
- Ensure that all maintenance activities are carried out safely without compromising plant operations.

The expectation: Daily maintenance should be planned, monitored and closed systematically. Repeated breakdowns and unresolved maintenance issues should not become routine.

2. Preventive Maintenance & Equipment Reliability

- Develop and maintain preventive maintenance schedules for all critical machinery, equipment and plant utilities.
- Prepare equipment-wise preventive maintenance checklists and ensure their regular execution.
- Coordinate with Production Managers and Shift In-charges to schedule maintenance activities without unnecessarily disrupting production.
- Ensure that preventive maintenance activities are completed within the prescribed timelines.
- Maintain proper records of inspections, servicing, maintenance history and equipment condition.
- Identify critical equipment and assess potential failure risks in advance.
- Monitor recurring maintenance issues and implement corrective and preventive measures.
- Continuously improve equipment reliability and minimize unplanned production downtime.

The expectation: Maintenance should move from a breakdown-driven approach to a preventive and predictive approach wherever practically feasible.

3. Project Execution & Engineering Activities

- Act as the key engineering and maintenance representative for all plant projects.
- Coordinate engineering requirements during installation, modification and commissioning of machinery and equipment.
- Work closely with Production, Projects, Purchase and external contractors to ensure timely project execution.
- Review engineering requirements, technical specifications and material requirements before procurement.
- Ensure that equipment installation and commissioning activities are completed safely and as per technical requirements.
- Monitor project progress, identify delays and escalate critical issues to management.

- Ensure proper documentation and handover of completed projects.

The expectation: Projects must be executed with technical ownership, cost awareness and adherence to agreed timelines.

4. Calibration, Inspection & Statutory Equipment Requirements

- Ensure timely calibration of plant instruments and measuring equipment.
- Maintain schedules for inspection and testing of vessels, pressure vessels and other applicable equipment.
- Coordinate hydrotesting and other required equipment inspections within prescribed timelines.
- Maintain proper calibration certificates, inspection reports, testing reports and related records.
- Ensure that equipment requiring periodic inspection or certification is identified and tracked.
- Coordinate with authorized external agencies wherever specialized inspection or testing is required.
- Highlight any technical or safety-related deviations requiring management intervention.

The expectation: No critical calibration, inspection or testing requirement should be missed due to poor planning or follow-up.

5. Engineering Procurement & Material Management

- Identify and communicate engineering material requirements for routine maintenance and project-related purchases.
- Prepare accurate material indents and requisitions with appropriate technical specifications.
- Understand the requirement before raising an indent and ensure that the correct MDS (Material Data Sheet) is prepared.
- Guide the Purchase Executive in identifying suitable suppliers and obtaining technically appropriate quotations.
- Ensure quotations are obtained within the stipulated timeline, normally within 24 hours for standard requirements.
- In emergency or exceptional cases, independently coordinate with vendors to obtain quotations and forward the details to Purchase for QCS preparation.
- Verify received materials against approved requirements and ensure appropriate quality and quantity.
- Coordinate with the Purchase and Stores teams to avoid delays in procuring critical engineering materials.
- Ensure that engineering material requirements are properly planned to avoid unnecessary emergency purchases.

The expectation: Procurement must be technically sound, timely and cost-conscious. Engineering purchases should not become a source of avoidable delays or excessive inventory.

6. Vendor Management & Cost Optimization

- Identify and develop reliable vendors for engineering materials, repairs and specialized maintenance services.
- Evaluate vendors based on technical capability, quality, delivery timelines and commercial competitiveness.
- Build robust working relationships with suppliers and service providers.
- Negotiate pricing, payment terms and delivery schedules wherever appropriate.
- Monitor vendor performance and address recurring quality or service issues.
- Review Annual Maintenance Contracts (AMCs) for critical machinery and equipment.
- Evaluate the commercial justification for each AMC and avoid unnecessary recurring expenditure.
- Review AMC costs periodically and explore opportunities for cost reduction without compromising equipment reliability.

The expectation: Every engineering expenditure should have a clear technical and commercial justification.

7. Maintenance Inventory & Spare Parts Management

- Identify critical machinery spares and maintain an appropriate inventory of essential items.
- Ensure availability of frequently required maintenance materials to minimize equipment downtime.
- Monitor consumption patterns and identify opportunities to optimize inventory.
- Coordinate with Purchase and Stores to ensure timely replenishment of critical spares.
- Avoid unnecessary stocking and obsolete engineering inventory.
- Maintain proper records of spare parts consumption and maintenance material requirements.

8. Team Leadership & Accountability

- Lead, guide and supervise the maintenance team on a daily basis.
- Allocate responsibilities clearly and monitor the execution of assigned jobs.
- Ensure that team members follow maintenance procedures, safety practices and preventive maintenance schedules.
- Develop technical capabilities within the team through regular guidance and on-the-job training.
- Evaluate team performance based on work quality, timely completion, breakdown response and preventive maintenance execution.
- Maintain discipline and accountability within the maintenance function.
- Ensure that maintenance activities are properly documented rather than remaining dependent on individual knowledge.

9. Budget Management, Safety & Interdepartmental Coordination

- Prepare and monitor maintenance expenditure in coordination with the Plant Head.
- Identify opportunities to reduce recurring maintenance costs and optimize engineering expenditure.
- Ensure that all maintenance activities comply with applicable safety procedures and environmental requirements.
- Coordinate effectively with Production, Purchase, Stores, Accounts and Projects teams.
- Communicate maintenance priorities,

equipment risks and unresolved issues to the concerned department heads.
- Submit regular reports covering breakdowns, preventive maintenance compliance, pending jobs, material requirements and maintenance expenditure.

What We Are Looking ForEssential Qualifications & Experience

- Diploma or Bachelor's degree in Mechanical, Electrical or related Engineering discipline.
- Approximately 5–8 years of relevant maintenance experience in a manufacturing or chemical industry environment.
- Hands-on experience in industrial machinery maintenance, breakdown management and preventive maintenance.
- Experience handling maintenance teams and coordinating with Production departments.
- Familiarity with equipment calibration, pressure vessel inspection, hydrotesting and maintenance documentation.
- Experience in engineering procurement, vendor development and commercial negotiations.
- Understanding of industrial safety requirements and maintenance best practices.

What Will Make You Stand Out

- Hands-on technical capability: You can diagnose problems and guide the team towards practical solutions rather than simply forwarding issues to others.
- Ownership mindset: You take responsibility for equipment reliability and do not wait for repeated follow-ups from management.
- Preventive thinking: You identify potential failures before they turn into production breakdowns.
- Cost consciousness: You understand that maintenance is not just about fixing equipment but also about controlling the total cost of ownership.
- Planning and discipline: You maintain preventive maintenance schedules, spare inventories, records and follow-up systems.
- Cross-functional communication: You can coordinate effectively with Production, Purchase and other department heads.
- Team leadership: You can build a technically competent and accountable maintenance team.
- Project orientation: You are comfortable handling engineering modifications, equipment installation and commissioning activities.

This Role May Not Be Right For You If

- You prefer only supervising maintenance technicians rather than getting involved in technical problem-solving.
- Your experience is primarily limited to attending breakdowns without implementing preventive measures.
- You are uncomfortable taking ownership of maintenance planning, documentation and reporting.
- You depend entirely on Purchase or external vendors for technical decisions.
- You do not have the ability to manage costs, prioritize jobs and coordinate with other departments.
- You require constant management intervention to complete routine responsibilities.

Key Performance Expectations (KPIs)

Performance will be evaluated on measurable outcomes, including:

- Preventive Maintenance Compliance: Timely completion of scheduled preventive maintenance activities.
- Equipment Reliability: Reduction in recurring breakdowns and unplanned equipment downtime.
- Breakdown Response: Timely response, resolution and root-cause analysis of critical breakdowns.
- Maintenance Cost Control: Effective control of maintenance expenditure, AMC costs and emergency purchases.
- Calibration & Inspection Compliance: Completion of scheduled calibration, inspection and testing activities within timelines.

Growth Opportunity

This position offers an opportunity to take progressively greater ownership of the engineering and maintenance function as the organization expands.

A candidate who demonstrates strong technical capability, team leadership, cost management and the ability to establish systematic maintenance practices can grow into a broader engineering leadership position, with responsibility for maintenance operations across multiple manufacturing units.

Why Join Ashu Organics

- Opportunity to work in an established and growing specialty chemicals manufacturing organization.
