Faculty Position in Linguistics, Human-Centered Explainable AI (HCXAI) and Conversation Design Position: Assistant Professor / Associate Professor, depending on qualifications and experience Curriculum Area: Culture, Communication, & Community (CCC) | School of Strategic Communication MICA invites applications from scholars working at the intersection of linguistics, human-centered explainable AI (HCXAI), human–computer interaction (HCI) and conversational AI. The appointment will contribute to an interdisciplinary area within CCC linking language, communication, design and human-centered AI. Teaching and applied research will examine how intelligent systems communicate through language, and how explanations enable users to understand, question and appropriately trust their outputs and recommendations. Candidates from linguistics, computational linguistics, cognitive science, HCI, interaction design, conversational UX or explainable AI should demonstrate alignment with this focus. Academic Responsibilities Teaching and Curriculum Development
• Develop and deliver courses in linguistics, HCXAI, HCI, conversational AI and conversation design.
• Design studio-based, project-led learning in dialogue and explanation design, conversation prototyping, usability testing and evaluation of AI interactions.
• Develop learning resources and assessments integrating conceptual understanding, research and applied practice.
• Contribute to core teaching requirements for 2027–28 and interdisciplinary curriculum development. Research and Applied Development
• Sustain research examining how people interpret, trust and act on AI explanations and AI-generated language, including conversational explanations.
• Investigate ambiguity, multilingual interaction, accessibility, cultural context, bias, over-reliance and responsible AI design.
• Develop methods to evaluate explanations, conversational systems and human–AI interactions.




• Publish in relevant peer-reviewed journals and/or scholarly conference proceedings; pursue cooperative research and funded projects. Academic Mentorship, Industry Engagement and Institutional Service
• Mentor student projects and support interdisciplinary initiatives in responsible, human-centered AI.
• Collaborate with industry, product teams, designers and developers on explainable and conversational AI, voice interfaces and AI-enabled services.
• Contribute to academic administration, faculty committees and institutional responsibilities. Qualifications and Academic Credentials
• A PhD in Linguistics, Computational Linguistics, HCI, Explainable AI, Cognitive Science, Interaction Design or a closely related discipline from a recognised institution in India or abroad.
• A strong academic record and scholarship aligned with language, human communication, human-centered AI or interactive system design and evaluation.
• Prior academic teaching and/or research experience is essential.
• Demonstrated understanding of language and communication, with expertise in designing or evaluating interactive or explainable AI systems.
• Evidence of teaching effectiveness or capacity to develop interdisciplinary, studio-based, project-led courses. Candidates with submitted doctoral theses may be considered for Assistant Professor, subject to MICA’s recruitment policy and doctoral completion requirements. Appointment level will follow MICA’s recruitment criteria. Desirable Expertise and Academic Attributes Experience with explainable interfaces, chatbots, voice assistants, AI-powered products, dialogue systems, large language models or conversational UX; qualitative user research, usability testing, discourse analysis or HCI methods; multilingual interaction, sociolinguistics, pragmatics, accessibility or culturally responsive design; and relevant prototypes, user studies or research outputs. Candidates should integrate theory, research and design practice, demonstrate strong collaboration, communication and mentoring skills, and uphold academic integrity, ethical research, inclusive teaching and responsible AI.
