Key Responsibilities
A. Press Part Design and Feasibility
• Study customer drawings, 3D data, specifications, material grades, thickness, and GD&T; requirements.
• Develop 3D models and 2D drawings of sheet metal press components.
• Conduct part feasibility and DFM (Design for Manufacturing) analysis.
• Evaluate blank development, flat patterns, forming feasibility, bend allowances, springback, and material utilization.
• Identify potential risks related to wrinkles, cracks, distortion, dimensional variation, and formability.
• Review critical dimensions and coordinate with customers and internal teams for design clarifications.
• Incorporate engineering changes and maintain drawing revision control. B. Press Tool Design
• Design and develop press tools for blanking, piercing, bending, forming, drawing, and trimming operations.
• Design progressive, compound, and single-operation tools; tandem or transfer tools where applicable.
• Prepare strip layouts, station sequencing, blank layouts, and material utilization calculations.
• Design complete tool assemblies, including punches, dies, stripper plates, punch plates, die plates, backing plates, and guide systems.
• Calculate and verify punch-die clearance, cutting force, press tonnage, shut height, stroke, and relevant tooling parameters.
• Select suitable tool steels, standard components, springs, guide pillars, bushes, and other tooling elements.
• Prepare 3D tool assemblies, 2D manufacturing drawings, assembly drawings, and bills of materials (BOMs).
• Ensure tool designs meet requirements for manufacturability, rigidity, safety, maintenance, and tool life. C. CAD Modeling and Documentation
• Prepare accurate 3D models, 2D drawings, and detailed component drawings using CATIA V5, Siemens NX, SolidWorks, AutoCAD, or equivalent software.
• Maintain design standards, drawing formats, BOMs, and engineering documentation.
• Conduct design reviews and verify interfaces, clearances, and assembly feasibility before releasing designs for manufacturing.
• Use forming simulation software such as AutoForm or equivalent, where available and applicable. D. Tool Development and Tryout
• Coordinate with the tool room, machining, EDM, wire-cut, grinding, assembly, and press shop teams.
• Provide technical support during tool manufacturing, assembly, and press tryout.
• Analyze and resolve tooling and component issues, including burrs, cracks, wrinkles, springback, dimensional deviations, and improper cutting.
• Modify tool designs based on tryout results and implement corrective actions.
• Support achievement of dimensional accuracy, stable production, and required tool performance.
• Coordinate with quality and production teams for sample inspection and approval. E. Cross-Functional Coordination
• Work closely with Production, Quality, Tool Room, Purchase, Project Engineering, and Customer Engineering teams.
• Support APQP, PFMEA, PPAP, control plans, and other quality documentation, as applicable.
• Ensure timely completion of design activities and support new product development projects.
• Identify opportunities for tooling cost reduction, cycle-time improvement, and scrap reduction. Requirements Technical Skills Required
• Solid knowledge of sheet metal stamping processes and press tool design.
• Good understanding of blanking, piercing, bending, forming, drawing, and trimming operations.
• Knowledge of strip layout, die clearance, press tonnage, tool materials, and standard tooling components.
• Proficiency in 3D modeling, 2D detailing, assemblies, and engineering drawing interpretation.
• Knowledge of GD&T;, dimensional inspection, and manufacturing tolerances.
• Practical understanding of tool room processes and press tool tryout.
• Ability to independently analyze design and production problems and implement corrective actions. Experience and Competencies
• Hands-on experience in both press part design and press tool design.
• Exposure to automotive sheet metal components and new product development is preferred.
• Ability to handle design activities from feasibility through tooling tryout.
• Strong analytical, troubleshooting, communication, and coordination skills.
• Ability to manage multiple projects and meet committed deadlines. Expected Deliverables
• Press part 3D models and 2D drawings.
• Part feasibility reports and manufacturing recommendations.
• Strip layouts and complete press tool 3D assemblies.
• Tool component drawings, assembly drawings, and BOMs.
• Design review records and engineering change documentation.
• Tool tryout support and corrective action reports.
• Production-ready designs meeting quality, cost, and delivery targets. Overall Responsibility To independently design and develop sheet metal press components and associated press tools, ensuring manufacturability, dimensional accuracy, cost-effectiveness, reliability, and timely project execution from initial feasibility to successful production handover.
