About Epsilon
Epsilon Electronic Equipment & Components Pvt. Ltd. is based in Hyderabad and manufactures electronic equipment for Indian Railways. Our products include signalling and telecom equipment, battery chargers, GPS clocks, media converters and transformers.
Role Overview
We are putting a structured design and testing process in place, backed by a dedicated R&D; team, so that we can take on more product upgrades and new product development for Indian Railways.
This senior position will lead that effort. The selected engineer will define the current design and testing process, work with management to recruit the team, and lead it. The team will include PCB testing engineers, hardware engineers and a firmware engineers.
The role involves guiding the testing team in debugging boards, leading the design of new products, and upgrading products already in service on the railway network, as well as developing new products as per RDSO specifications. The engineer will work in close coordination with the production and quality teams.
Responsibilities
Leading the R&D; function
- Define and implement the new design and testing process.
- Work with management to recruit and onboard the R&D; team: PCB testing engineers, a hardware engineer and a firmware engineer.
- Manage the PCB testing team, plan their work, and guide them in debugging boards when issues occur.
- Lead the hardware and firmware engineers in designing new products and review their work.
Design and development
- Design analogue, digital and mixed-signal circuits, and prepare schematics and bills of materials.
- Design power electronics, including SMPS, battery chargers and DC-DC converters.
- Build prototypes and debug them on the bench using oscilloscopes, logic analysers and power analysers.
- Design PCB layouts, or guide the layout work,
for single-sided and double-sided boards.
- Develop and maintain hardware for microcontroller-based products with GPS, RS-232/485, Ethernet and E1/optical interfaces, and work with the firmware engineer on board bring-up and the hardware-firmware interface.
- Reproduce legacy boards from Gerber files and physical samples.
Testing, documentation and production support
- Prepare design documents, test procedures and drawings.
- Support type and acceptance testing as per RDSO and IRS standards, including EMI/EMC, environmental, surge and insulation tests.
- Resolve assembly and field problems in coordination with production and develop test jigs and alternative components where required.
- Support Incoming Quality Control by defining component specifications.
- Evaluate and qualify vendors and components, including replacements for obsolete parts.
Requirements The following four areas will be assessed most closely:
- Ownership and design experience: You must have personally owned at least one hardware design from concept to production or field use and be able to explain it in detail.
- Power electronics: Robust fundamentals and proven design experience in SMPS, battery chargers, linear regulators and protection circuits.
- Practical debugging: The ability to identify and fix faults on actual hardware using bench instruments, and to guide others in doing the same.
- Team leadership: Experience in guiding, supervising or mentoring engineers or technicians, and the ability to build and develop a team.
Additional requirements:
- B.E./B.Tech in Electronics, Communication
- 7 to 10 years of hands-on hardware design experience in industrial, telecom, power or railway electronics.
- Working knowledge of a schematic and PCB design tool such as Altium, OrCAD, KiCad or CADSTAR.
- Practical experience with microcontrollers (ARM Cortex-M, PIC, 8051 or similar) and interfaces such as UART, SPI, I2C, RS-485 and Ethernet.
- Understanding of EMI/EMC, thermal design, and design for manufacturing and testing.
- Good written English for technical documentation.
Indian Railways Experience
Experience with Indian Railways products, RDSO specifications, or railway signalling and telecom equipment is a strong advantage, and such candidates will be given priority during shortlisting and selection. This includes familiarity with RDSO/IRS specifications, type and acceptance testing, and railway environmental and EMI/EMC requirements. It is not mandatory.
Additional Advantages
- Experience in transformer or inductor design, battery chargers, or telecom equipment such as E1, optical and media converters.
- Basic knowledge of embedded C.
- Familiarity with ISO 9001 documentation practices.
What We Offer
- Work on upgrades and improvements to real products running on the Indian Railways network, with your design changes reaching the field.
- Quick decisions, with ideas moving from proposal to prototype to production without long approval chains.
- A leadership opportunity: shape the new design and testing process and lead the R&D; team you help recruit.
- PF and other statutory benefits as applicable.
