Design Head – Solar & Renewable Energy

Function: Engineering / Design Reporting to: Head of Engineering / Business Head Location: As per business requirement

Role Overview The Design Head will lead and manage the organisation’s engineering and design function for solar and renewable energy projects. The role is responsible for delivering safe, compliant, technically robust and cost-effective designs across distributed rooftop, ground-mounted, floating solar, open access, wind and solar-wind hybrid projects. The incumbent will drive end-to-end design quality, engineering standardisation, value engineering, cross-functional coordination and the development of a high-performing multidisciplinary design team.

Key Responsibilities

- Design Function Leadership

 Lead, plan and manage the design department in line with the organisation’s business plan, project pipeline and delivery priorities.

 Set design strategies, resource plans, deliverable schedules, quality benchmarks and performance measures.

 Build, mentor and develop multidisciplinary engineering teams across electrical, civil, structural and mechanical disciplines.

 Review team capacity, allocate resources and ensure timely delivery of accurate, construction-ready engineering packages.

- Solar & Renewable Energy Design

 Lead end-to-end engineering and design for distributed rooftop, ground-mounted and floating solar power plants.

 Oversee design and engineering for open access solar, wind and solar-wind hybrid projects, including grid integration and associated balance-of-plant systems.

 Guide feasibility assessments, site-specific engineering, plant layouts, equipment selection, system sizing and detailed engineering.

 Ensure appropriate design integration for energy storage and Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) solutions and other emerging renewable technologies.

- Engineering Quality, Validation & Compliance

 Review and approve engineering deliverables, including SLDs, layouts, technical specifications, calculations,

construction drawings, BOQs and BOMs.

 Ensure design accuracy, constructability, equipment compatibility, safety, reliability and compliance with applicable

Indian and international codes, standards and regulations.

 Identify technical constraints,

design risks and interface issues; drive timely corrective and preventive actions.

 Establish design review gates, verification procedures, checklists and quality assurance processes.

- Cross-functional & Stakeholder Management

 Work closely with Sales, Procurement, Projects, Quality, ESG, Operations and Asset Management teams to deliver cost-effective designs and support faster project execution.

 Engage with clients, consultants, vendors, utilities and other external stakeholders to understand requirements,

resolve technical queries and provide engineering recommendations.

 Support tendering and pre-bid activities through technical evaluation, design inputs, quantity estimates and engineering clarifications.

- Value Engineering & Cost Optimisation

 Drive value engineering to improve the function-to-cost ratio while maintaining safety, quality, performance and statutory compliance.

 Optimise equipment selection, system configuration, material quantities, installation methods and constructability.

 Validate BOQs/BOMs, identify cost-saving opportunities and support procurement negotiations through sound technical assessments.

Design Head – Solar & Renewable Energy |

 Promote solutions that improve ease of fabrication, transportation, installation, operation and maintenance.

- Site Survey, Process Improvement & Capability Building

 Develop and improve site survey formats, tools and data-capture processes to ensure accurate collection of all engineering inputs, including obstructions, distances, access constraints, existing electrical infrastructure and usable area.

 Train and guide site survey teams to capture complete and reliable information for capacity assessment, feasibility and design development.

 Develop and maintain standard operating procedures, design guidelines, checklists, templates and engineering documentation.

 Continuously evaluate new technologies, software, tools,

materials and industry practices to improve engineering quality, productivity and delivery.

- Industry & Technology Development

 Stay updated on developments in solar, wind, floating solar, energy storage, power electronics, grid integration and renewable energy regulations.

 Evaluate and recommend new technologies and engineering practices that can improve project performance,

reliability and competitiveness.

 Develop the team’s technical capability in floating solar, storage solutions and other emerging renewable energy solutions.

Required Qualifications & Experience

 Bachelor’s degree in Electrical, Mechanical, Civil or a closely related Engineering discipline. A relevant postgraduate qualification is an advantage.

 Extensive experience in renewable energy engineering and design, preferably across solar PV projects and associated electrical infrastructure.

 Proven experience leading design or engineering teams and managing multidisciplinary design deliverables.

 Strong understanding of solar PV system design, plant layouts, electrical balance of plant, grid interconnection,

substation/switchyard engineering and project execution interfaces.

 Experience with engineering documentation, technical specifications, BOQs/BOMs, design calculations, drawing reviews and applicable codes and standards.

 Exposure to rooftop, ground-mounted and floating solar, wind/hybrid projects and BESS is highly desirable.

 Solid capability in design optimisation, value engineering, stakeholder management and delivery planning.

Preferred Technical Exposure

Solar design and simulation tools such as PVsyst; engineering and drafting tools such as AutoCAD; and power system analysis tools such as ETAP, PSCAD or PSS®E. Knowledge of IEC, IEEE, relevant IS standards, CEA requirements and applicable grid codes is preferred.

Key Competencies

 Strategic and people leadership

 Strong engineering judgement and problem-solving

 Design governance, quality assurance and attention to detail

 Commercial awareness and cost optimisation

 Cross-functional collaboration and stakeholder management

 Planning, prioritisation and timely execution

 Continuous improvement and technology orientation
