Job Title: Firmware Engineer
We are seeking a talented and detail-oriented Firmware Engineer to design, develop, and maintain low-level software for embedded systems. In this role, you will work closely with hardware, electrical, and software engineering teams to bring reliable, high-performance products from concept to production. You will be responsible for the full firmware development lifecycle, including architecture design, coding, debugging, testing, and deployment.
Key Responsibilities
- Design, develop, test, and debug embedded firmware for microcontrollers (ARM Cortex-M, AVR, ESP32, STM32, PIC, etc.) and embedded processors.
- Write clean, productive, and well-documented C/C++ code for resource-constrained environments, optimizing for memory usage, power consumption, and real-time performance.
- Develop and maintain bootloaders, device drivers, HAL (Hardware Abstraction Layer) modules, and low-level peripheral interfaces (UART, SPI, I2C, CAN, USB, ADC, PWM, DMA, GPIO).
- Architect and implement Real-Time Operating System (RTOS) based solutions (FreeRTOS, Zephyr, RT-Thread, ThreadX) as well as bare-metal applications.
- Collaborate with hardware engineers to review schematics, define pin mappings, validate board bring-up, and ensure firmware-hardware compatibility.
- Design and implement communication protocols and wireless connectivity stacks such as BLE, Wi-Fi, LoRa, Zigbee, MQTT, and TCP/IP.
- Implement robust OTA (over-the-air) update mechanisms, secure boot, firmware encryption, and secure key storage.
- Develop and execute unit tests, integration tests, and hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) test suites to ensure firmware reliability and stability.
- Use debugging tools and techniques including JTAG/SWD debuggers, logic analyzers, oscilloscopes, and protocol analyzers to diagnose and resolve complex issues.
- Manage source code using Git, participate in code reviews, and maintain CI/CD pipelines for automated firmware builds and testing.
- Profile and optimize firmware for performance, power efficiency, and footprint; implement low-power/sleep modes and energy harvesting strategies.
- Write and maintain technical documentation, including design specifications, API documentation, release notes, and test reports.
- Troubleshoot field issues, analyze failure modes, and deliver firmware fixes and improvements across product versions.
- Ensure compliance with relevant industry standards and certifications (e.g., UL, CE, FCC, ISO 26262, IEC 61508) where applicable.
- Stay current with emerging embedded technologies, tools, and best practices, and contribute to continuous improvement of development processes.
Required Skills & Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field (Master's preferred).
- 3+ years of professional experience in embedded firmware development.
- Expert-level proficiency in embedded C and strong knowledge of C++ and Python for tooling and test automation.
- Hands-on experience with common microcontroller architectures (ARM Cortex-M, AVR, ESP32, etc.) and their toolchains (GCC, Keil, IAR).
- Deep understanding of RTOS concepts including scheduling, interrupts, task synchronization, semaphores, and queues.
- Strong grasp of memory management, pointers, data structures, and low-level hardware/software interaction.
- Experience with communication interfaces and protocols: UART, SPI, I2C, CAN, USB, Modbus, MQTT.
- Proficiency with debugging tools: JTAG/SWD, logic analyzers, oscilloscopes, and multimeters.
- Experience with version control (Git) and build systems (Make, CMake, PlatformIO).
- Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with wireless stacks (BLE, Wi-Fi, LoRaWAN, Zigbee) and IoT platforms.
- Familiarity with secure firmware practices: secure boot, cryptography, TLS, TrustZone.
- Experience with DSP, motor control, or sensor fusion algorithms.
- Knowledge of Linux embedded systems, device trees, and kernel modules.
- Experience with automated testing frameworks and CI/CD for embedded targets.
- Familiarity with EMC/EMI considerations and safety-critical development standards.
Benefits
- Competitive salary and performance-based bonuses.
- Comprehensive health, dental, and vision insurance.
- Flexible work arrangements and generous PTO.
- Professional development budget and conference attendance.
- Opportunities to work on cutting-edge hardware products from prototype to production.
