About the Role
Bonterra is looking for an AI-first Senior Software Engineer to design, build, and ship software by orchestrating AI coding agents across the full development lifecycle. This role is intentionally language and stack agnostic: rather than being defined by expertise in a single programming language, the ideal candidate uses AI tools (such as Claude Code, GitHub Copilot, Cursor, or equivalent) to work productively across whatever languages, frameworks, and systems a given team needs, from backend services and APIs to front-end applications, data pipelines, and infrastructure automation. You will take ownership of complex technical problems end to end, using AI as a force multiplier for planning, implementation, testing, and review, while retaining full engineering accountability for the quality, security, and reliability of everything you and your agents ship.
Responsibilities
AI-ORCHESTRATED SOFTWARE DELIVERY (45%)
- Designs, builds, tests, and ships production-quality features and services end to end, using AI coding agents to plan, scaffold, implement, and validate work throughout the development lifecycle.
- Breaks product and technical requirements into discrete units of work that can be delegated to, or executed in partnership with, AI agents, then reviews and refines the resulting output for correctness, security, and maintainability before it reaches production.
- Selects the language, framework, and architecture best suited to each problem, using AI assisted tooling enables productive work across many stacks (for example, TypeScript/Node.js, Python, Java, C#, Go, Ruby, PHP, or SQL/PL-SQL).
- Builds and maintains REST and/or GraphQL APIs, relational database schemas and migrations, and event-driven or serverless integrations (for example, AWS Lambda, EventBridge, SQS) as required by the assigned team's platform.
- Troubleshoots and resolves production issues, balancing the speed of AI-assisted iteration with the rigor Bonterra's customer-facing systems require.
TECHNICAL DESIGN & SYSTEM OWNERSHIP (20%)
- Owns complex technical challenges from design through delivery, authoring technical design documents and proposing architecture that other engineers, and AI agents, can build against.
- Evaluates tradeoffs between build speed, reliability, security, and long-term maintainability, and makes sound engineering decisions under ambiguity.
- Maintains and modernizes existing systems, including legacy codebases, ensuring stability while incrementally improving code health.
CROSS-FUNCTIONAL COLLABORATION (15%)
- Partners daily with product managers, designers, architects, and fellow engineers to translate business requirements into working software, participating in sprint planning, ticket refinement, and demos.
- Collaborates with DevOps and platform teams on CI/CD pipelines, deployment practices, and infrastructure needs.
- Communicates technical concepts, tradeoffs, and AI-assisted workflows clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
CODE QUALITY, REVIEW & MENTORSHIP (10%)
- Reviews code, both human-written and AI-generated, from peers, providing thoughtful and constructive feedback that upholds Bonterra's engineering standards.
- Mentors other engineers on effective AI-assisted development practices, secure coding, and testing discipline through pairing, code review, and knowledge-sharing sessions.
AI TOOLING EVALUATION & CONTINUOUS IMPROVEMENT (10%)
- Stays current on emerging AI coding assistants, agent-orchestration frameworks, and related tooling, proactively evaluating and recommending tools that improve team velocity and quality.
- Identifies opportunities to automate manual engineering or operational workflows using AI and agentic approaches.
KEY BEHAVIORS -- THE "HOW"
- Treats AI agents as force multipliers while maintaining full accountability for the quality, security, and correctness of anything shipped to production, whether written by a human or an agent.
- Demonstrates a bias to action and comfort with ambiguity, iterating quickly while still applying sound engineering judgment.
- Communicates openly and proactively, sharing context, blockers, and learnings with teammates and stakeholders.
- Approaches recent languages, frameworks, and systems with curiosity rather than attachment to a particular stack.
- Gives and receives feedback constructively, contributing to an inclusive, collaborative engineering culture.
OUTCOME EXPECTATIONS -- THE "IMPACT"
- Ships secure, reliable, production-quality software faster by effectively orchestrating AI coding agents across the development lifecycle.
- Reduces manual engineering and operational toil through automation and thoughtful tooling choices.
- Delivers on product and technical requirements regardless of the underlying programming language or technology stack.
- Elevates the quality and velocity of the broader engineering team through mentorship, code review, and shared AI-assisted best practices.
- Physical Requirements & Work Environment
- Office Environment: This is a hybrid role with an expectation of 3 days a week in the office.
- Travel Requirement: Up to 10% of the time.
Qualifications
Required Minimum Qualifications
- 5+ years of professional software engineering experience building and shipping production systems.
- Demonstrated, hands-on experience using AI coding assistants or agents (such as Claude Code, GitHub Copilot, Cursor, or equivalent) to plan, implement, test, and ship real features, not just for autocomplete.
- Professional proficiency in at least one modern programming language (for example, JavaScript/TypeScript, Python, Java, C#, Go, Ruby, or PHP) and a demonstrated ability to ramp quickly on unfamiliar languages or frameworks with the help of AI tooling.
- Experience designing and building REST and/or GraphQL APIs and working with relational databases, including schema design, migrations, and query performance.
- Experience with cloud infrastructure (AWS or equivalent), CI/CD pipelines, and Git-based version control and code review workflows.
- Solid grounding in software design patterns, data structures, and test-driven development.
- Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to make sound implementation decisions with incomplete information.
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
Office Environment:
This is a hybrid role with an expectation of 3 days a week in the office.
Travel Requirement:
Up to 10% of the time.
